Position Summary Under the supervision of the Academic Director, the Math & Literacy Tutor is responsible for leading focused academic tutoring sessions and enrichment activities for youth in YMCA After School Programs. With the goal of fostering mathematical achievement and confidence, the Math & Literacy Tutor will develop and implement lesson plans tailored to support and supplement schoolwide efforts in mathematics. The Math & Literacy Tutor is responsible for creating and leading math-focused sessions weekly for elementary school-aged youth (K-5th), as directed by the Academic Director and program team. Sessions must be engaging, align with YMCA curriculum guidelines, and incorporate Youth Development Principles to support students' academic growth and personal development.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Meets school district Instructional Aide requirements of: -High school diploma or equivalent AND passed District Instructional Aide Exam; OR High school diploma or equivalent AND passed California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST); OR High school diploma or equivalent AND 48 college units (transcript verification required); OR Associate’s degree or higher
  • Proficient academic skills in elementary school math and literacy instruction.
  • Available Monday-Friday, 8 hours/day during program hours (shifts vary).
  • Must be available Monday-Friday, between 1:00-6:00 pm for scheduled enrichments.
  • Able to supervise and guide youth.
  • TB Test clearance within the last 2 years.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with elementary or middle school-aged youth.
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or other languages.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement engaging, age-appropriate lesson plans for elementary school students (K-5th) to strengthen math/reading skills and confidence.
  • Provide individualized and group tutoring support to meet diverse learning needs and promote academic growth.
  • Design and facilitate academic-focused enrichment activities that encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and a positive attitude toward learning.
  • Create an inclusive and supportive environment that fosters participation and self-confidence in mathematics and reading.
  • Incorporate Youth Development Principles into activities to support students’ social, emotional and academic development.
  • Follow YMCA policies and safety guidelines during all tutoring sessions and activities.
  • Maintain an organized and clean learning space to ensure a productive environment.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities to improve teaching practices.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor to support program goals
