About The Position

The Academic Counselor is under general supervision of the Director of TRIO Student Support Services ( SSS ) and is responsible for advising, counseling and leading small group activities for under-prepared college students and disadvantaged college students. A primary focus of this position is to improve the retention of first-generation and/or low-income students who become participants of the APSU Student Support Services Program, a federal TRIO program.

Responsibilities

Operate a personal computer and associated software (Outlook, Word, Excel, MS Office, student database management, etc.).
Communicate effectively and appropriately.
Maintain confidentiality of records and information.
Interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations, the University community and the public.
Maintain files accurately, in paper and in software programs.
Accurately prepare records and reports.
Work independently, handle multiple tasks simultaneously and keep deadlines.
Effectively supervise personnel, provide guidance as needed and complete all associated tutor and computer lab assistant personnel actions in a timely and accurate manner.
Effectively plan and implement program activities.
Be an advocate for students who are first-generation and/or low-income at the University.
Effectively counsel and advise students.
Coordinate small group activities and cultural trips for students and document their purpose and results.
Monitor student progress and make recommendations.
Work occasional evening and weekend hours.
Knowledge of the academic setting and college financial aid process.
