About The Position

The Academic Advisor will advise students about program requirements, course selection, and plans after graduation. The position will assist with student academic transitions including transition from high school to college, transfer and career advisement. This position supports student life and learning through student advocacy, academic coaching, customer service, campus and community referrals and institutional outreach. The Academic Advisor works closely with all campus departments to support student success and persistence endeavors.  This is a part-time position. Requirements

  • Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with a wide variety of students, faculty and staff.
  • Flexibility, professionalism and articulate written and oral communication skills to explain both university and college policies clearly.
  • Competency in handling multiple tasks to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Must be accurate and detail oriented to prepare degree plans.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Software and internet use.
  • Strong work ethic and sense of commitment to student development are essential.
  • Understanding of the importance of a positive approach to student advising.
  • Ability to work positively with multigenerational advisees.
  • Bachelor degree and two years of direct experience in academic advising; or any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job and/or as approved by the Human Resources department.

Responsibilities

  • Advises students on career and academic issues, identifies educational options appropriate for each student and assists with the analysis of each option, including possible outcomes and their implications.
  • Participates as a member of the Student Services team in providing academic/career information and advising regarding academic requirements, university programs and services to prospective, incoming, and current students seeking to enroll at CCC.
  • Works with students dealing with complex academic situations, understanding policy and procedure, and completion of forms and documents. Monitors participant's progress within a particular educational program and formulates plans for student success.
  • Provides advisement aligned with student interests, values, abilities and major or exploratory interests.
  • Provides unofficial evaluation of transfer transcripts from other academic institutions for AGEC equivalencies and possible application to CCC and university degree programs.
  • Monitors academic progress of students toward degree completion, identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g. study skills, tutoring) and refers students to appropriate campus resources for assistance.
  • Interprets and explains CCC academic policies and procedures.
  • Checks various forms for accuracy, assists students in their completion, signs petitions as an advisor, removes holds when appropriate, and documents student interactions.
  • Maintains student files, databases, and records in accordance with federal guidelines (FERPA).
  • Supports data collection and analysis.
  • Assesses the student's stage of development and promotes growth by assisting students in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals.
  • Provides student outreach as part of the early alert program and other student retention strategies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
