About The Position

We seek applicants for a full-time position on our Advisement staff to advise students related to decisions on their life goals, vocational goals, course and program choices, and schedule of classes. Academic Advisors assist with implementing the College's Strategic Enrollment Management plan. General responsibilitiesinclude, but are not limited to: Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of programs, curriculum, institutional requirements, course sequences, degree requirements, and career and college transfer opportunities Acquaint prospective and current students with College requirements, policies, services, and opportunities Advocate for students through established protocol Identify and direct students to appropriate support resources and assist them in communicating effectively Maintain accurate contacts of social service providers and support services within HCC for referral opportunities Manage and direct own caseload of students while monitoring their progress toward achievement of academic and career goals Help advisees with course selection that reflects their educational goals Initiate proactive contacts with students, as defined by the department Keep accurate records of contacts with students Provide advisement services during evening hours as required

Requirements

  • Master's degree in counselor education, counseling psychology, college student personnel, or related area
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively and inclusively within a diverse campus community
  • Education and experience in career/life planning and student development theory
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Commitment to access and achievement in education for all students, including but not limited to students of color, students with LGBTQ+ identities, students with disabilities, low-income students, first-generation students, and immigrant students
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask
  • Availability to work evening hours as required

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in career advising or counseling, academic advising, admissions/records, or student personnel at the community college level
  • Experience using the Strong Interest Inventory and other similar major exploration inventories

Responsibilities
