About The Position

Under the general direction of the Department Chair of Business Administration (with input from the Senior Assistant Dean, Student Services), the Academic Advisor II is responsible for providing academic advising services to junior and senior level majors in the Department of Business Administration of the Lerner College of Business & Economics. This position will provide quality undergraduate student advising that includes assistance in administrative processes such as course registration and senior checkout. Knowledge of curriculum options, degree requirements, academic policies and procedures for advisement of students in the majors and minors housed in the Department of Business Administration is necessary. The position will assist with student programming, related undergraduate student activities and orientation sessions as necessary. The Academic Advisor II helps in the development of programs and events for prospective students and supports programs and University-wide initiatives for entering freshmen and transfer students. In addition, the advisor will assist in College honors events and convocation ceremonies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, Master's preferred, with three years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Degree in student personnel, college counseling or another related field preferred.
  • Effective presentation and group facilitation skills. Ability to present effectively to small and large groups and to work productively with a wide range of constituencies.
  • Ability to grasp, retain, and disseminate an extensive and varied body of information.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and employ decision-making skills under the guidance of the supervisor.
  • Ability to evaluate student transcripts and/or records.
  • Knowledge of academic standards governing academic warning, suspension, and/or dismissal and student recruitment and retention issues.
  • Ability to communicate course prerequisites, certification, and/or curriculum/graduation requirements to students.
  • Advanced working knowledge of advisement policies, procedures, systems, regulations, and standards at the university level.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to analyze, summarize, and effectively present data.
  • Proficient computer skills, including use of presentation software, Excel, Teams, Zoom, and experience with UDSIS. Working knowledge of Stellic preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide student advisement for current Department of Business Administration majors, prospective students interested in those programs, and transfer students. Disseminate information on academic policy and curricular matters.
  • Advise students on matters such as registration, choosing majors and minors, and academic planning.
  • Refer students to other offices on campus as appropriate.
  • Meet with prospective students and their families. Represent Lerner College and provide presentations to families during Lerner College recruitment events such as Discovery Days, Blue and Golden Days, and Decision Days.
  • Perform regular degree audits, including reviewing student transcripts for completion of degree requirements, submitting course substitution requests, and communicating with students regarding degree completion and accuracy of audits.
  • Contact students on academic warning or in academic difficulty through individual contact and continual follow-up.
  • Participate in Lerner College undergraduate events, including convocation, academic orientations, major fairs, and academic warning meetings.
  • Provide support and referral services to students, working with offices such as Student Advocacy and Support, the Center for Academic Success, the Center for Counseling and Student Development, Lerner Career Services, Disabilities Support Services, Admissions, and Housing & Residence Life.
  • Work collaboratively with the faculty in the Department of Business Administration.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Lerner College advising faculty and staff to set advisement goals and propose solutions to advising issues that affect the quality of services provided to students in the Lerner College.
