About The Position

Florida Atlantic University is seeking two (2) Academic Advisor I - Boca Raton, FL. The Academic Advisor I is responsible for providing general advising services to students by monitoring student academic plans to provide timely, proactive outreach to ensure degree progress and timely graduation using defined learning outcomes.

Requirements

  • Masters degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization required.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Education, Student Affairs/Development, Counselor Education, Psychology, or a related field.
  • One year of experience in advising, counseling, orientation, student services, or related experience within higher education industry.
  • Graduate internships can be applied toward one-year experience.
  • Proficiency in working with computer programs, specifically Microsoft Word, Access, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of the Appreciative Advising model is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve in the Academic Coaching and Career Enhancement for Student Success (ACCESS) Academic Coaching Center as part of University Advising Services (UAS) and provide individual academic coaching/advising and academic workshops to first and second-year students in such areas as time management, study skills, test-taking strategies, and others.
  • Manage a caseload of first and second-year students on academic probation and meet with students on a recurring basis throughout each semester to assist with course requirements, set academic goals, and develop academic and career action plans.
  • Collaborate with the FAU Career Center, Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), FAU college advising offices, and other members of the University community to develop/implement programs that address the needs of students on academic probation.
  • May serve as a liaison to an assigned college or student support unit on campus, and assist with revising and updating curriculum information and other media publications.
  • Clear undergraduate registration holds; respond to email inquiries, present at new student orientations, assist with campus events, such as the Admissions Office open house and campus days, and other activities supporting the mission of UAS.
  • Performs retention efforts, virtual student outreach, and job-related tasks for some extended evening hours on a rotating basis to support FTIC, second-year students, and UAS.
  • Work and support undecided students, students with academic difficulty, and students transitioning into their major or choice, and regularly interact with students, parents, university personnel, and the general public.
  • May teach the SLS freshman transition courses.
  • Performs other job-related duties assigned.
