Job Summary The Academic Advising Lead, under the general supervision of the Director of the University Honors Program (UHP), utilizes his/her/their in-depth knowledge of university requirements and policies to advise diverse undergraduate students participating in the UHP on their degree and Honors-specific requirements as well as on university policies and procedures pertinent to their academic needs and situations. The Academic Advising Lead provides student-centered services, manages programmatic and curricular initiatives designed to strengthen the academic success and retention of diverse students in the UHP, and represents the UHP in collaborative advising with CSULB Academic Colleges’ Advising Teams, UCUA, and Athletics. Student-Centered Academic Advising Lead must be able to serve a large population of diverse honors students from across campus.

Requirements

  • The ideal candidate demonstrates a strong student‑centered approach, effectively engaging with diverse students, parents, faculty, and staff while maintaining a professional demeanor and team‑oriented mindset.
  • They possess exceptional oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal abilities, and proficiency in essential computer applications such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Highly organized, they excel at prioritizing responsibilities, meeting deadlines, and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Additionally, they bring sound decision‑making, critical and creative thinking, and objectivity to their work, with the flexibility to occasionally adjust their schedule to include evening hours when needed.
  • Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
  • Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree with upper or graduate coursework in counseling and guidance, human relations, or related fields and three years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.

  • CSU experience strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain large and small-scale programs, series programs, and creative practices to develop our students’ success in completing UHP requirements alongside General Education and graduation requirements.
  • Represent the UHP as the Advising Lead for campus-wide meetings and in collaboration with the CSULB academic colleges to promote student success.
  • Independently Provide Advising and support Admission of FTFY, current, and transfer students.
  • Assist the UHP Director by preparing advising reports as needed.
  • Perform daily office tasks as needed including answering phones, responding to emails, and answering in-person questions to our office.
  • Plan monthly UHP advising events and workshops, often in collaboration with other campus services and organizations. This includes managing the Event Calendar Process, overseeing calendar updates, collecting sign-in sheets, creating flyers, and delegating Honors credit tracking.
