About The Position

The Connecticut Humane Society is seeking full-time Animal Care/Adoption staff members to provide hands-on care for animals and assist customers. This position is responsible for the daily care of animals in kennels, cat areas, and small animal enclosures, including feeding, watering, cleaning, dog walking in all weather, monitoring health and behavior, socializing animals, and maintaining records. It also involves actively assisting customers with adoption and surrender processes, educating them on pet ownership responsibilities, and providing species and breed-specific information. Additional duties include greeting visitors, managing phone calls, basic dog training, animal bathing and grooming, assisting with animal intake and treatment, general shelter cleaning, data entry using PetPoint, attending off-site events as animal handlers, and supporting other District locations. This full-time, benefit-eligible position is ideal for a creative, customer service-oriented individual who can manage multiple priorities in a busy environment. It requires basic knowledge of animal handling and care, as well as an understanding of different types of companionship animals.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Ability to perform physically strenuous activities which will require lifting of moderate to heavy weights (up to 40 lbs.)
  • Ability to perform physically strenuous activities including standing and/or bending
  • Ability to perform physically strenuous activities including pushing brooms and/or mops
  • Ability to perform physically strenuous activities including walking and/or controlling dogs and/or cats
  • Ability to use cleaning solutions
  • Ability to sit at a desk for long periods of time
  • At least one to two years' experience working in a customer services position or a shelter environment
  • Weekend work required
  • Proficiency in computers
  • Basic knowledge of animal handling and care
  • Basic understanding of the different types of companionship animals

Nice To Haves

  • Associates Degree in animal science or related field
  • Knowledge of animal handling and experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily care for animals in kennels, cat areas, and small animal enclosures (rabbits, ferrets, mice/rats, guinea pigs etc.)
  • Ensure provision of adequate food and water for animals
  • Perform kennel cleaning
  • Walk dogs in all types of weather conditions
  • Monitor animals and report health or behavior abnormalities
  • Socialize animals
  • Create and maintain necessary animal records and perform data entry
  • Actively assist customers in the adoption and surrender process
  • Provide information to educate customers and counsel them with regard to pet ownership responsibilities as well as species and breed-specific data
  • Greet all incoming visitors
  • Inform visitors and volunteers on proper sign in procedures for entry
  • Answer phone calls
  • Appropriately forward callers and provide basic shelter information
  • Work with all shelter dogs on basic training and social skills
  • Perform animal bathing and basic grooming
  • Assist with processing animal intake, evaluation, and treatment
  • Clean the shelter
  • Enter information in PetPoint
  • Attend off site events as animal handlers
  • Support Fox Memorial Clinic and other District locations as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned by a supervisor
