In an effort to better understand the dynamic of career paths we have been studying job descriptions to see what skills and abilities are required for roles at varying levels. Given the rise in demand for Growth Marketing roles, we started there.  Since companies use titles in very different ways, we also had to normalize the levels. We used L1 (1-2 years), L2 (2-4 years), L3 (4-6 years) and L4 (6-8+ years). L4 is often senior manager or Director. We did not map VP and C Level positions for this exercise.  Below is what we found by analyzing 88 Job descriptions in startups with less than 500 employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the analytical skills necessary for a career in growth marketing?

Analytical skills are crucial in growth marketing for interpreting data and making evidence-based decisions. Key analytical skills include proficiency in data analysis tools like Google Analytics, understanding of A/B testing, knowledge of key performance indicators (KPIs), and the ability to derive actionable insights from complex datasets. Growth marketers must also be adept at conversion rate optimization and customer segmentation to tailor marketing strategies effectively.

How important is creativity in growth marketing, and how can it be applied?

Creativity is essential in growth marketing as it drives innovation and helps in developing unique growth strategies. It can be applied in designing compelling marketing campaigns, crafting engaging content, and brainstorming novel approaches to user acquisition and retention. Creative thinking also aids in problem-solving, enabling growth marketers to find new angles and untapped opportunities in the market.

Can you succeed in growth marketing without a technical background?

While a technical background can be beneficial, it is not a strict requirement for success in growth marketing. However, a willingness to learn and adapt is necessary. Growth marketers should have a basic understanding of technical concepts like SEO, marketing automation tools, and web analytics. They should also be able to collaborate effectively with technical team members, such as data scientists and software developers, to implement growth initiatives.
