About The Position

This recruitment is being given to fill part-time/temporary positions in the Parks and Recreation Department and to establish an eligible referral pool that may be used to fill future part-time/temporary opportunities. Pre-Employment Background, DOJ Live Scan and Drug Screen : Potential new hires into this classification are required to successfully pass a DOJ Live Scan, a pre-employment background investigation and a pre-employment drug screen as a condition of employment. Final appointment cannot be made unless the eligible has successfully completed the DOJ Live Scan, background process and passed the drug screen. The County pays for the initial drug screen.

Requirements

  • Must pass fingerprinting as mandated by state law. California state law requires all public recreation program employees to submit to fingerprinting for the purpose of obtaining a summary of criminal convictions.
  • KNOWLEDGE Basic child care techniques; organizational skills; basic public relations and communications techniques; basic safety practices; basic practices of hygiene.
  • ABILITY Learn wildlife and ecology concepts; interact effectively and appropriately with young children; conduct arts & crafts activities; effectively guide and mentor youth; assist with preparation and implementation of basic educational and recreational program activities; understand and follow oral and written directions; communicate effectively with children and parents, both orally and in writing; read and understand park rules and regulations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Assists teachers with daily activity plans and instructions
  • Supervises, mentors, and works with zoo education program participants.
  • Attends a variety of training sessions.
  • Helps assure and monitor the safety of program participants and enforces rules and regulations applicable to program activities
  • Maintains equipment inventory
  • Ensures safe use of equipment and supplies.
  • Prepares and provides a safe learning and teaching environment for participants and teachers.
  • Responds to parents’ and participants’ questions regarding daily lesson plans, education site and schedule.
  • Works in a team environment to effectively conduct planned programs and projects
  • Maintains schedules
