About The Position

YRTC-Kearney is seeking passionate and motivated graduate-level students pursuing a Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field to join our team as Therapy Interns. This internship provides hands-on experience working with adolescents in a residential treatment setting, offering an opportunity to develop critical skills in therapeutic assessment, intervention, and treatment planning. The Nebraska Youth Rehabilitation and Treatment Center (YRTC) provides structured treatment, rehabilitation, and support services to youth in a secure residential setting. Our interdisciplinary teams are committed to helping youth develop the skills needed for positive change and successful reintegration.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited college or university (two-to-four-year institution) OR recently graduated (within one year) from an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited college or university (two-to-four-year institution).
  • Must successfully complete background checks and required pre-service trainings.

  • Completion of core coursework in counseling theories and techniques.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish rapport with adolescents from diverse backgrounds.
  • A commitment to trauma-informed, youth-centered approaches.

Responsibilities

  • Co-facilitate individual and group therapy sessions to youth residents under licensed supervision.
  • Assist with intake assessments, clinical documentation, and development of treatment plans.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute to case consultations.
  • Support crisis intervention efforts as needed and learn trauma-informed care practices.
  • Engage with residents to foster resilience, coping skills, and positive behavioral change.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical and professional standards.
