About The Position

The Youth Counselor is a treatment team member responsible for providing direct care to meet the physical and psychosocial needs of adolescents through direct and indirect physical and verbal interaction. Duties are performed under direct supervision of the Program Director, Facility Manager and Shift Lead; some tasks are accomplished independently. The role involves day-to-day supervision, ensuring safety and care for children individually, while in school and in groups. It also promotes and assists adolescents with self-help skills in areas like eating, hygiene, grooming, and handling individual problems. The counselor models and supports positive youth development and positive behavioral self-management through praise, attention, and use of a behavioral incentive system, encouraging adolescents’ interaction and socialization with other peers and providing feedback on appropriate behavior. The division/program, Star View Adolescent Center, is a comprehensive mental health inpatient residential facility for adolescents, serving up to 60 adolescents (ages 12-17) statewide. It provides intensive residential services for clients with serious mental health problems, operating as a 24/7 locked facility with programs including Psychiatric Health Facility, Community Treatment Facility, and Non-Public High School, offering Multidisciplinary Mental Health Services, Therapeutic Behavioral Health Services, and Intensive Day Treatment Program.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent plus One (1) year experience with seriously emotionally disturbed children, or Two (2) years’ experience with seriously emotionally disturbed adults.
  • OR – BA/BS Degree

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day supervision, ensure safety and care for children individually, while in school and in groups.
  • Promote and assist adolescents with self-help skills in the areas of eating, hygiene, and grooming, handling individual problems and other activities.
  • Models and supports positive youth development and positive behavioral self-management through praise, attention, and use of behavioral incentive system.
  • Encourages adolescents’ interaction and socialization with other peers, providing feedback to adolescents on appropriate behavior.
  • Participate in Pro-Act crisis intervention as required.
  • Note children’s progress in daily progress notes.
