A Youth Certified Peer Specialist (CPS-Y) is a young adult, aged 18 through 26, who has personal experience living with a mental health or substance use condition, or both. This individual must have received behavioral health services as a youth and be willing and able to self-identify as a person living with a behavioral health condition. The role involves using their lived experience to help other youth and young adults facing similar behavioral health challenges. The CPS-Y provides emotional support, shares knowledge, assists individuals in identifying tools for wellness, resiliency, and recovery, offers practical assistance, and connects people with resources, opportunities, and communities of support. It is important to note that Youth CPSs are not counselors, caseworkers, or clinicians. All candidates are required to take and pass a certification test to become a CPS-Y.
