About The Position

A Youth Certified Peer Specialist (CPS-Y) is a young adult, aged 18 through 26, who has personal experience living with a mental health or substance use condition, or both. This individual must have received behavioral health services as a youth and be willing and able to self-identify as a person living with a behavioral health condition. The role involves using their lived experience to help other youth and young adults facing similar behavioral health challenges. The CPS-Y provides emotional support, shares knowledge, assists individuals in identifying tools for wellness, resiliency, and recovery, offers practical assistance, and connects people with resources, opportunities, and communities of support. It is important to note that Youth CPSs are not counselors, caseworkers, or clinicians. All candidates are required to take and pass a certification test to become a CPS-Y.

Requirements

  • Be 18-26 years of age (valid Georgia ID)
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Have a mental health (MH) condition, substance use disorder (SUD), or a co-occurring diagnosis
  • Possess a strong desire to identify themselves as a person living with a mental illness or substance use diagnosis
  • Be able/willing to actively seek and manage your own appropriate care
  • Be able to share their own personal story in a safe and appropriate way
  • Be well grounded in recovery wellness
  • Have one year between diagnosis and application to training
  • If the individual has a substance use condition, there must be one year continuous abstinent from substance use
  • Provide (2) letters of reference
  • Take and pass a test to get certified as a CPS-Y

Responsibilities

  • Work 40 hours weekly
  • Be living in recovery and able to publicly describe and model to others the things that they learned that helped them to wellness
  • Describe what they have had to overcome to get where they are today
  • Describe some of the things that they do daily to keep themselves on the path of recovery
  • Describe what their diagnosis means, how it impacted their life and what things they did to change that
  • Help others understand that recovery is possible
  • Offer emotional support
  • Share knowledge
  • Work with individuals to identify tools of wellness/resiliency/recovery available for everyday life
  • Provide practical assistance
  • Connect people with resources, opportunities and communities of support
