A Youth Certified Peer Specialist (CPS-Y) is a young adult, aged 18-26, with personal experience living with a mental health or substance use condition, or both, who has received behavioral health services as a youth. This role requires the individual to be willing and able to self-identify as a person living with a behavioral health condition and to use that experience to help other youth and young adults facing similar challenges. The CPS-Y provides emotional support, shares knowledge, assists individuals in identifying tools for wellness, resiliency, and recovery in everyday life, offers practical assistance, and connects people with resources, opportunities, and communities of support. It is important to note that CPS-Ys are not counselors, caseworkers, or clinicians. All candidates must take and pass a test to become certified as a CPS-Y.
