About The Position

Reporting to the Youth & Family Services Supervisor, the Youth and Family Services Librarian plans, coordinates and implements library services offered at Douglas County Libraries (DCL) with a primary focus on services for youth and families. This role has a clear understanding of principles and practices related to professional public library work, with a chief emphasis on delivery of premium service experiences to library customers. This role works as an effective member of the Customer Experience team and on?cross-departmental?teams in collaboration?with other library staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in library science or related field.
  • Three years of professional experience, preferably in a public library.
  • Basic skills in Microsoft 365 or other productivity, collaboration, and cloud-based services software.
  • Ability to learn and apply new technologies.
  • Must have a reliable method of transportation between all DCL locations.
  • Must have the physical ability, stamina, mobility and manual dexterity to support a seven-day-per-week week operation.
  • Work at computer stations for extended periods.
  • Participate in meetings and events at various locations and at varied times throughout the day.
  • Ability to read as small as 8pt font.

Nice To Haves

  • A master's degree in library science strongly preferred
  • Experience preparing and delivering storytimes with a focus on current ALA early literacy principles
  • A combination of experience and education will be considered

Responsibilities

  • Creates and delivers exceptional, customer-focused library services, fostering an environment of hospitality, discovery, and inclusion for youth and families.
  • Builds relationships with caregivers and children through personalized service, early literacy engagement, and expert support.
  • Leads and supports youth services by delivering storytimes, book clubs, and other literacy services grounded in early and general literacy principles, reading development, and mentors storytellers
  • Serves as Person-In-Charge to ensure smooth branch operations and safety, offering leadership and direction to staff and customers in a team-based, service-oriented environment.
  • Delivers exceptional, personalized customer experiences by building relationships, anticipating needs, and fostering an environment of discovery, inclusion, and innovation.
  • Circulates materials and promotes resources through effective merchandising and hand-selling.
  • Applies deep knowledge of youth library services—including research support, readers’ advisory, technology instruction, and customer engagement—to guide families in accessing resources across platforms while tailoring these services to diverse ages, abilities, and learning styles.
  • Anticipates trends in literacy, publishing, child development, and library services to inform programming, merchandising, and service delivery that aligns with evolving customer expectations and the DCL brand and culture.
  • Recommends thoughtful feedback to help DCL stay relevant and vital.
  • Uses effective communication skills and works interdepartmentally to achieve outcomes by promoting, implementing and supporting library services.
  • Collaborates effectively across departments and divisions, understands organizational objectives, and recognizes the essential nature of every role at DCL.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative, productive relationships with co-workers and branch staff, thereby contributing to a cohesive organization that supports alignment and a positive culture to achieve strategic plans.
  • Develops proficiency in relevant industry and organizational technology.
  • Engages in DCL’s performance feedback process and meets departmental expectations, policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
