About The Position

Arlington County's Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking a Water/Sewer/Streets (WSS) Crew Leader to work within the Water Maintenance section and provide on-site leadership to water maintenance teams which specialize in the maintenance, replacement, repairs, and new installations of water mains, and water related emergencies, as well as tasks related to vegetation restoration, potholes, asphalt patches, and concrete curb and gutter. This position reports to the Trades Manager/Leader I and assumes the role of the Trades Manager/Leader I in his/her absence. The ideal candidate is dedicated, well organized and willing to respond to emergencies as needed and has technical knowledge and experience leading or guiding the work of staff, with the ability to perform maintenance and repair in the areas listed above. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential as this position involves explaining details and providing instructions. Computer skills are also critical as the crew leader will create reports, utilize the work order system and respond to emails.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent
  • Three (3) years of experience in public works, construction or another trade vocation that demonstrates the ability to perform skilled manual maintenance and/or construction including one (1) year of trades work that includes responsibility for providing leadership to other trades workers and/or managing trades projects
  • Possession of valid Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in performing as a team lead or lead worker in construction or maintenance operations
  • Experience in performing daily construction, maintenance and repair in water maintenance and one other technical area, including sewer or streets maintenance operations.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite software to perform administrative functions such as time reporting, activity, personal injury, accident and vehicle reports
  • Possession of or ability to obtain the following certifications: Confined Space Entry, VDOT Intermediate Work Zone Safety certification.

Responsibilities

  • Working with the supervisor in scheduling crew work and providing technical expertise and feedback to crew members on all areas related to water maintenance and asphalt and concrete work while resolving on-site issues
  • Directing crew members on-site in technical procedures involving asphalt and/or concrete maintenance, utility repairs (water & sewer), and construction project management
  • Ensuring new team members are trained and apply safety precautions, and ensuring that supplies, tools, materials and equipment are available for the job
  • Interacting with citizens, contractors, Miss Utility locators, engineers, and surveyors to coordinate project completion
  • Utilizing asset management systems to complete administrative operations including time sheets, material tickets, hired equipment tickets, and daily project reports
  • Using Microsoft Office and database software to complete daily tasks, create various reports, and communicate via email
  • Responding and mobilizing the team in emergency situations, including communicating with appropriate staff.
