About The Position

They are seeking motivated individuals with an interest in construction to join their team as a Work Based Learning (WBL) Construction Intern. This summer internship provides supervised, hands-on construction experience, teaching foundational carpentry skills, safety practices, and job site professionalism.

Requirements

  • Current high school student actively enrolled in Carpentry, Construction Trades, Building/Construction Technology, or a related CTR pathway.
  • School districts: Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Petersburg, and Colonial Heights
  • Must be at least 16 years old with access to reliable transportation to/from the worksite (or confirmed access to district/partner transit where available)
  • Able to work approximately 40 hours per week for a summer internship
  • In good standing with satisfactory progress toward graduation (e.g. GPA = 2.0 or local equivalent).
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be willing to work non-traditional hours, including early mornings and evenings, to meet project needs
  • Demonstrated basic tool competency, measurement skills, shop safety foundations, and ability to follow written/verbal instructions.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 lbs with proper technique, and perform frequent bending, reaching, and kneeling.
  • Comfort working in varying temperatures, around noise, and with dust (PPE provided/required).
  • Willingness to work on ladders/scaffolding when trained and permitted by site policy.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
  • Completion of OSHA-10 (Construction) or equivalent safety training prior to site placement (or within first 30 days, per employer policy).

Responsibilities

  • Assist with measuring, cutting, and assembling wood and related materials under direction.
  • Support framing, layout, and installation activities while working under the supervision of experienced carpenters.
  • Safely use basic hand and power tools, including hammers, tape measures, levels, squares, and saws.
  • Assist with loading and unloading materials, tools, and equipment and perform basic jobsite preparation.
  • Observe and learn proper carpentry techniques, tools, and workflow from professional carpenters and mentors.
  • Participate in jobsite safety briefings, check-ins, and training activities.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment at all times.
  • Complete assigned projects or skill-based tasks in alignment with Career and Technical Education (CTE) standards.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support project success and skill development.
  • Participate in the Hourigan Safety and Health Management System (SHMS) by committing to safe work practices, raising concerns, attending and applying safety and health training, and eliminating hazards within your capability and control and the help of safety staff.
