About The Position

The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provides services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness, and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department employs approximately 2,000 employees. The WNC Agricultural Center is a self-supporting multi-use complex that operates 365 days per year. The primary purpose of the facility is to serve the horse/livestock and trade show industries and meet the needs of both the agricultural and non-agricultural community by providing and maintaining buildings and grounds capable of hosting equine events, tradeshows, conventions, seminars, community events and public expos, as well as, carrying out all activities of the annual North Carolina Mountain State Fair. The North Carolina Mountain State Fair serves the agricultural, manufacturing, commercial, educational, governmental, and other agencies across the State and its visitors. This position supervises operational functions and oversight, including operational budget at the WNC Agricultural Center Horse Complex. Daily operations: the oversight of the senior Maintenance staff charged with supervising custodial, skilled trade and landscape employees; construction contractors are responsibilities of this position. This position provides direction, supervision, development and support of operational functions at the WNC Agricultural Center Horse Complex / North Carolina Mountain State Fair and to oversee capital improvement projects on the campus.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of methods and practices relating to agricultural and livestock exhibitions.
  • Knowledge of the applicable environmental rules and regulations governing waste Disposal.
  • General knowledge of building codes and all other rules and regulations governing general maintenance and repairs of facilities.
  • Ability to develop and implement short- and long-term goals, plans and policies to enhance the growth of the complex and its facilities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of individuals and groups.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
