About the position

The Wildlife Program Manager is responsible for planning, managing, monitoring, and evaluating the daily operations of staff and services aimed at protecting, restoring, and enhancing the natural resources of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe. This role involves managing projects, conducting research, and advising leadership on wildlife management practices that are culturally significant to the Tribe. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders and a commitment to the Tribe's mission and values.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a Wildlife Program strategic plan aligned with CIT natural resource objectives.
  • Participate in interviewing and hiring of staff.
  • Host regular meetings to ensure communication between staff and program-related activities.
  • Identify short-term and long-range issues and goals for the Wildlife Program and recommend actions.
  • Manage contract budgets and prepare financial reports to achieve financial objectives.
  • Secure additional funding and grant monies for Wildlife Program services and equipment.
  • Advise state and federal wildlife managers on the Tribe's interests regarding culturally relevant wildlife species.
  • Provide technical and policy support to the Natural Resources Department and other CIT entities.
  • Collect and analyze data to monitor wildlife and habitat conditions; create maps.
  • Prepare and present reports on the status of Wildlife Program projects as needed.
  • Oversee the CIT's beaver holding facility and its daily operations, ensuring humane care of animals.
  • Plan and implement habitat improvement projects, obtaining necessary permits and approvals.
  • Coordinate community natural resources, education, and cultural awareness projects and events.
  • Engage with peers on technical committees focusing on habitat manipulation and resource management.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge through research and participation in professional societies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, zoology, fisheries, wildlife, chemistry, natural sciences, or a closely related field.
  • Three years of related experience in natural resources or a related field.
  • Two years of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and tribal laws and regulations regarding natural resources.
  • Experience with data analysis and research methodologies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with GIS and GPS software.
  • Knowledge of animal husbandry best practices.
  • Familiarity with budgeting and financial reporting.
