About The Position

Under general supervision, the Wildlife Biologist implements various day-to-day activities associated with CFR Part 139.337 Wildlife Hazard Management at Detroit Metro (DTW) and Willow Run (YIP) Airports. The Wildlife Biologist is responsible for carrying and/or enforcing the tasks/duties/requirements as prescribed by the Wildlife Hazard Management Plan.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences that includes: A. At least nine (9) semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, and wildlife management or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; AND B. At least twelve (12) semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, and entomology, or research courses in these subjects (excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate); AND C. At least nine (9) semester hours in botany or the related plan sciences, OR A combination of education and experience equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least nine (9) semester hours in wildlife subjects, twelve (12) semester hours in zoology, and nine (9) semester hours in botany or related plant science, as described above in A., B., and C., plus appropriate experience or additional education; AND one (1) year of experience monitoring and coordinating wildlife activities.

  • Proficient with Office Suite Software (Core - Email, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Presentation).
  • Proficient with Database Systems / Software.
  • Proficient with Weather Prediction/Tracking Systems/Software.
  • A valid Driver's License and a safe, acceptable driving record.
  • Must obtain WCAA Airfield Certification (Movement Area) within 6-month probationary period.
  • Must maintain the ability to qualify for a security ID badge.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts daily wildlife observations and mitigates hazards to aviation using direct control activities on the AOA via various methods including pyrotechnics, traps, and firearms. Records and maintains highly detailed and accurate data to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Identifies habitat and wildlife attractants on and around DTW and YIP airports and makes recommendations to mitigate attractants.
  • Review construction plans and landscape projects for potential wildlife impacts on aircraft operations and make recommendations to enhance safety at DTW and YIP airports.
  • Analyze and evaluate wildlife activity and wildlife strike data to recommend proactive wildlife management strategies.
  • Assists in the development of wildlife hazard management assessments and continual monitoring programs.
  • Operate and maintain various firearms and equipment used for wildlife control activities. Ensures that firearms and ammunition are properly and safely stored.
  • Performs annual wildlife hazard management training for Airport Authority personnel in accordance with FAA Advisory Circular 150/5200-36.
  • Chairs Wildlife Management Committee meetings.
  • Escorts vendors and vehicles as necessary to sites located in restricted areas of the airport.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.
