About The Position

The Oregon Military Department is a state agency that supports the Oregon National Guard. You are NOT required to be a member of the Oregon National Guard to apply for this position. The Oregon Military Department is recruiting for 2 Seasonal Wildland Fire Suppression Specialist. These are full-time Seasonal state positions located at Camp Rilea in Warrenton, Oregon. This recruitment will be open continuously until both positions are filled. The first list of candidates will be pulled on February 20, 2026, and may close any time after that date. These positions are represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees’ (AFSCME) union. NOTE: This recruitment announcement will be used to establish a list of qualified candidates to fill the current vacancy and may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur. What You Will be Doing The purpose of this position is to perform a wide variety of manual tasks in the areas of wildland fire prevention, pre-suppression, and fire suppression. Serves as a member or engineer operator for an engine or on a hand crew. This position is responsible for engine/crew readiness of an assigned crew. This position coordinates and/or performs physical labor necessary to suppress and extinguish wildfire. Duties include detection, pre-suppression, prevention, and suppression. Also completes routine building and ground maintenance. Working Conditions Employee is expected to work in a safe and efficient manner, including reporting to work for scheduled shift with all personal protective equipment (PPE). Required to drive wildland fire engines obeying all traffic laws and drives on steep narrow forest roads. Required to work various shifts including holidays, nights, weekends, and long hours on short notice. Assignments to emergency incidents may require employee to be away from duty station for up to 21 days. Occasionally required to work under adverse conditions such as noise, smoke, heat, rough terrain, dust, inclement weather and exposure to poison oak, bees and poisonous snakes. Requires occasional exposure to heavy equipment operations, aircraft, hazards of burning and/or falling material, and chemical and biological pesticides.

Requirements

  • Two (2) seasons of Wildland firefighting experience.
  • Successful applicants must take and pass the physical fitness Work Capacity Test at the arduous level.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Firefighter type 2 (FFT2)
  • Must have and maintain a favorable criminal background check.
  • Employee is required to maintain a drug/alcohol free workplace in accordance with OMD Drug/Alcohol CPM’s, Policies, and the Statewide Drug Free Workplace Policy 50-000-01.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S without a visa sponsorship.
