About The Position

The Oregon Military Department is a state agency that supports the Oregon National Guard. You are NOT required to be a member of the Oregon National Guard to apply for this position. The Oregon Military Department is recruiting 3 Permanent Wildland Fire Suppression Specialists. These are permanent full-time state positions located at the Rees Training Center in Hermiston, Oregon. This announcement will be open continuously until all positions are filled. The first candidate list will be pulled on February 20, 2026 and may close any time after this date. These positions are represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees’ (AFSCME) union. NOTE: This recruitment announcement will be used to establish a list of qualified candidates to fill the current vacancy and may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur. What You Will be Doing The purpose of this position is to perform a wide variety of manual tasks in the areas of wildland fire prevention, pre-suppression, and fire suppression. Serves as a member or engineer operator for an engine or on a hand crew. This position is responsible for engine/crew readiness of an assigned crew. This position coordinates and/or performs physical labor necessary to suppress and extinguish wildfire. Duties include detection, pre-suppression, prevention, and suppression. Also completes routine building and ground maintenance.

Requirements

  • Two (2) seasons of Wildland firefighting experience.
  • Successful applicants must take and pass the physical fitness Work Capacity Test at the arduous level.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Firefighter type 2 (FFT2)
  • Must have and maintain a favorable Criminal background History check and be able to obtain and maintain a favorable Department of Defense National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) Suitability Determination (T1).
  • Employee is required to maintain a drug/alcohol free workplace in accordance with OMD Drug/Alcohol CPM’s, Policies, and the Statewide Drug Free Workplace Policy 50-000-01.
