About The Position

Responsible for performing wide range of duties for client certification, recertification, and high risk services in the WIC clinic. Description of Primary Duties & Responsibilities 1. Responsible for providing direct nutrition services to clients, individually and in group classes. Assesses and interprets medical and nutrition histories, discusses current topics of concern and interest to the client, providing client centered counseling and education. Reviews information with client, assessing for understanding and readiness for change, working with client to set goals. Assigns, explains and issues appropriate food packages based on individual needs and preferences. Provides follow up and continuity of care for individual care plans. Stays abreast of current information, knowledge, and practices in the field. Participates in all required nutrition and breastfeeding trainings. Create nutrition education materials and resources upon request. 2. Responsible for referrals to nutrition, breastfeeding, health, public assistance, and community services as needed in a client centered environment. For all high risk clients, explain the benefits of services from a Registered Dietitian, and offer all clients an individual counseling and care plan appointment. Promotes a breastfeeding supportive environment by ensuring all clients are aware of breastfeeding support services available through WIC. Completing referrals to breastfeeding peer counselors and other community breastfeeding programs and services as needed and required by policy. Refer clients to other community programs and resources as necessary and required by policy. Utilizes the Michigan Care Improvement Registry to assess immunization and lead testing status. Refers to medical providers and/or local health department as indicated. 3. Provides high risk nutrition services in the clinic Performs high risk counseling, developing individualized care plans. Refers and provides continuity of care with plan for follow up with Nutritionist-CPA or RD. Completes and monitors special food package requests for Class III specialty formula and food requests. Serves as a nutrition specialist, providing technical assistance and consultation with clinic staff and other community resource agencies or organizations.

  • Reviews email at least twice daily.
  • Expected to maintain reliable transportation for travel between InterCare locations and for the occasional overnight state-wide travel to attend MDHHS training and conferences.
  • Professional and Technical Knowledge Completion of the dietetic registration exam. [Dietetic registration exam must be passed within 6 months of hire.]
  • Maintains BLS requirement. BLS is a mandatory by InterCare and our FTCA agreement with the Federal Government. It must be completed within 90 days of hire.
  • Technical Skills Ability to use Microsoft Word sufficient to produce simple correspondence and basic reports and documents.
  • Ability to use MI-WIC system and other computer programs to gather and analyze data, collate and interpret information, and provide information to clients, programs, and colleagues.
  • Communication Skills Expected to possess excellent cross cultural communication skills and the ability to communicate professionally to clients, vendors, business associates and staff members at all levels.
  • Ability to communicate complex and/or technical information to professionals, colleagues and others in a clear effective manner.
  • Expected to exercise tact and negotiate resolutions to complex situations and in the resolutions of conflicts and disagreements.
  • Physical Demands Job duties are performed in the typical clinic environment, which requires ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations.
  • The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following: Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, frequently sit, and lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, reach with arms & hands, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and manipulate (using keyboard, office equipment).
  • Visual acuity to use keyboard, operate office equipment, and read printed material.
  • Must to able to hear and communicate with clients and staff on telephone and those who are served in person, and speak clearly in order to communicate information to clients and staff.
  • May be exposed to contagious/infectious diseases.
