About The Position

NEVADA HEALTH CENTERS IS LOOKING FOR A WIC PEER COUNSELOR TO SUPPORT WIC FAMILIES HERE IN SOUTHERN NEVADA. JOIN OUR TALENTED TEAM THAT FOCUSES ON SERVING THE COMMUNITY AND HELPING THOSE IN NEED BY EDUCATING AND SUPPORTING WIC PARTICIPANTS. The WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. This position may require relocation/reassignment to any of our clinics based on business needs. Flexibility and willingness to relocate are required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Has breastfed at least one baby (does not have to be currently breastfeeding) for at least a period of six months.
  • Bilingual fluent in English and Spanish

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables.
  • Ability to work and interact effectively and positively with other staff members to build and to enhance teamwork in the clinics and overall NVHC’s organization.
  • Ability to communicate in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Ability to understand and respond appropriately, effectively and sensitively to special population groups as defined by race, ethnicity, language, age, sex, etc.
  • Ability to hear and speak to converse over telephone.
  • Utilizes excellent listening skills and demonstrates patience.
  • Ensures confidentiality of information.
  • Ability to travel and/or provide coverage to multiple clinic locations

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to participant confidentiality policies.
  • Attends a series of state-provide peer counselor training and meetings, as well as locally coordinated breastfeeding in-service or classes.
  • Observes WIC staff, other peer counselors, and lactation consultants helping mothers breastfeed.
  • Reads assigned books or materials about breastfeeding.
  • Utilizes knowledge of NVHC policy and procedures, HIPAA, OSHA and other regulatory agencies in performing all duties at the clinic.
  • Utilizes knowledge of State WIC program policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and personal vehicle insurance.
  • Utilizes resources as needed to meet needs of the organization and patient.
  • Courteous, respectful and creates a safe, clean environment for patients/clients and staff.
  • Stays up to date with state and local programs essential for NVHC and WIC target populations.
  • Sets the example of exemplary customer service for both internal and external customers.
  • Diligent in evaluating procedures and workflow to increase efficiency and productivity in the clinic environment sharing successes with peers and supervisors.
  • Completes breastfeeding forms in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Diligent in working within all federally mandated timelines.
  • Utilizes WIC Peer Counselor job responsibilities document to ensure all facets of WIC Peer Counselor responsibilities are completed in a systematic, consistent manner.
  • Reports and time sheets are accurate, input in database, and/or submitted on time.
  • Maximizes clinic and eligibility materials and supplies.
  • Positively supports requests from administrative office and supervisor implementing policy and programs.
  • Works to create/maintain good relationships with supervisors and co-workers.
  • Fosters working together as a team: dealing with and resolving conflict in a timely, efficient and positive manner.
  • Actively participates in team meetings.
  • Participates in community functions that represent NVHC.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
