Job Summary The WIC Certifier Apprentice is an entry-level role designed to train and prepare employees to become a fully approved Washington State WIC Certifier . This is a paid apprenticeship that typically takes 6-12 months to complete. Upon successful completion and State certification, a promotion to WIC Certifier will be granted. This role blends clerical responsibilities, client support, and supervised nutrition-focused work while the employee progresses through WIC training modules, competency evaluations, and state approval requirements. Apprentices provide bilingual (English/Spanish) support to WIC clients, perform front-office and enrollment duties, assist with data collection, and gradually perform more certification tasks as competency increases.

Requirements

  • High school Diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR required or must be able to obtain within first 90 days of employment.
  • Must be willing to complete blood hemoglobin testing training.
  • English and Spanish fluency required
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information

Nice To Haves

  • One year experience working in an office setting preferred.
  • Previous experience working in WIC program preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Screens, enrolls, transfers and schedules Screens applicants, enrolls qualifying pregnant women, and transfers clients by completing demographic, ID, residency and household data collection, income verifications, Rights and Responsibilities notifications and appointment scheduling.
  • Conducts client intakes and interprets collected data Conducts client intakes by completing height, weight, hemoglobin testing, health history, and nutrition questions. Interprets collected data to accurately determine qualifying risks for program eligibility and certification.
  • Provides basic nutrition, health and safety, and breastfeeding education to clients after assisting them to set their own goal(s) for change. Use client centered counseling skills in providing all services to clients. Teaches nutrition and breastfeeding related classes.
  • Distributes WIC checks according to policies and procedures.
  • Performs general reception duties: Greet clients using AIDET model. Schedules and confirms appointments. Redirects clients to appropriate individuals. Answers phones. Copies, scans and faxes documents. Mail out notifications and reminder letters. Run weekly and monthly reports.
  • WIC Card Inventory Maintains accurate files and records and completes documentation in computer system for services provided.
  • Coordinates with providers and other departments for services and referrals needed to meet client needs as determined in the interview process.
  • Maintain participating caseload at 100% by scheduling walk-ins, completing appointment reminder calls, rescheduling missed appointments, and following up with inactive clients.
  • Participate in staff in-service training, conferences and continuing education opportunities.
  • Provides interpreting services and client scheduling for monolingual staff as needed.
  • Ensure that State and CVCH WIC program policies and procedures are strictly adhered to.
  • Provide instructions to clients on their rights and responsibilities, use of WIC cards, approved WIC foods, shopping tips and use of breast pumps.
  • Performs other duties and tasks as assigned by manager
  • Start shift on time and meet attendance standards per the FTE assigned in HRIS system.
  • Follow safety policies and maintain a clean, safe work environment.
  • Demonstrate sound work ethics, flexibility, and cultural sensitivity

  • Comply with CVCH policies, Joint Commission standards, and HIPPA regulations.
  • Run ad hoc reports as requested.
  • Participate in internal or external committees or special projects.
