About The Position

Under direct supervision, provides service to existing WIC programparticipants through routine counseling and potential WIC programparticipants by reviewing and certifying low-risk applicants. Adheres toall applicable US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Texas Departmentof State Health Services (DSHS) guidelines. Working conditions areprimarily inside an office environment. Exercises no supervision. This position is a "grant funded" position, therefore unclassified and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason. The San Antonio Metro Health District (SAMHD) provides public health services to clients, which may include risk for exposure to and possible transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. Staff in high-risk positions will be required to obtain relevant immunizations, per SAMHD PolicyDM4.16. Review and consideration will be given to requests for exemption from this policy. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
  • One (1) to Two (2) years of experience working in a WIC or other healthcare setting.
  • Successful completion of WIC Certification Specialist (WCS) courses through the Texas Department of State Health Services within six (6) months of hire.
  • Successful completion of required annual continuing education training hours to maintain WIC certification through DSHS.
  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.

Responsibilities

  • Greets clients as they come into the clinic, answers phone, schedules appointments, and provides general public with information concerning WIC services.
  • Screens applicants to determine WIC eligibility to include, but not limited to: collecting household income information, residency, hematocrit or hemoglobin values, anthropometric measurements, health history, and other related information.
  • Provides individual counseling on low risk WIC applicants in compliance with DSHS policy to include nutrition counseling services.
  • Enters WIC applicant data into graphing computer.
  • Conducts individual and group nutrition education classes.
  • Conducts self-audits on client charts, eligibility, and food delivery.
  • Maintains inventory of all work related to Texas WIC Database and food delivery on weekly and monthly basis.
  • Issues electronic food benefits to eligible WIC participants.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
