The WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator is responsible for the breastfeeding promotion and support activities for the WIC program. The Breastfeeding Coordinator is also responsible for training staff on the WIC breastfeeding policies, procedures, protocols, and breast pump loan program. The Breastfeeding Coordinator will also provide nutrition services for WIC participants. This position reports to the WIC Program Manager.

Requirements

  • High School Degree, GED, or equivalent
  • Current Certified Lactation Educator/Counselor (CLE/C) or International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) status
  • Current Basic Life Support certificate (BLS) or ability to obtain BLS certificate if IBCLC status is current.
  • Ability to relate to low income, minority individuals.
  • Minimum of six (6) months of supervisory experience
  • WIC Nutrition Assistant (WNA) Certification
  • Valid California driver's license, proof of insurance, and personal transportation
  • Knowledge of basic nutrition principles
  • Knowledge of nutrition and dietary principles to assess nutritional needs and provide counseling and education to WIC participants.
  • Knowledge of instructional skills and educational techniques to influence and guide nutritional care of clients for health maintenance.
  • At least 1 year of breastfeeding support experience
  • Completion of CLE/C course or IBCLC course
  • Ability to work individually and with others.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees and public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to identify problems, provide information, and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply appropriate written guidelines and work practices.
  • Ability to organize work and perform in an effective manner.
  • Ability to learn quickly, function under limited supervision, and multitask accordingly.

Responsibilities

  • Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
  • Provides breastfeeding leadership to local agency staff and facilitates coordination and integration of breastfeeding support services within the agency.
  • Plan and implement staff training on breastfeeding promotion & support for the WIC program.
  • Provides breastfeeding support for WIC participants.
  • Maintains and updates as needed agency policies and protocols on breastfeeding.
  • Oversees and tracks the WIC electric breast pump loan program.
  • Monitors breastfeeding rates and data collection for reporting and tracking successes.
  • Plans and oversees promotion for World Breastfeeding Week
  • Maintain & track breastfeeding supplies inventory.
  • Selects & develops breastfeeding education materials.
  • Participates in professional meetings, trainings, and continuing education.
  • Acts as site supervisor when needed.
  • Creates and implements breastfeeding classes for participants.
  • Publish monthly breastfeeding newsletter WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator
  • Assists the WIC Program Manager with development and implementation of the annual WIC Nutrition Services Plan (NSP)
  • Promote breastfeeding as the norm to all pregnant and postpartum WIC participants and their families.
  • Acts as the Local Vendor Liaison Communicate with local vendors regarding WIC-specific shopping or customer service issues as needed.
  • Provide nutrition assessment, education, counseling, and referrals to woman participants and parents/guardians of infants and children participating in the WIC program.
  • Participate in or teach group nutrition education activities.
  • Travels to different sites as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
