About The Position

As a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, you'll provide encouragement and support to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. You'll share knowledge, help overcome challenges, and connect families with resources to ensure a positive breastfeeding experience.

Requirements

  • Past or current WIC participant
  • Breastfed at least one baby for 6+ months (higher grades require more experience)
  • Enthusiastic about helping moms succeed with breastfeeding
  • Age 21+, valid Nebraska driver's license, insured vehicle
  • CPR certification (or ability to obtain)
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) required

Responsibilities

  • Counsel WIC moms by phone, in clinic, at home, or hospital visits
  • Provide breastfeeding education, encouragement, and problem-solving support
  • Facilitate prenatal and postpartum breastfeeding classes
  • Issue breast pumps following protocol
  • Refer families to lactation experts, physicians, or community services as needed
  • Keep accurate records and maintain confidentiality (HIPAA compliant)
  • Be available outside regular hours for urgent support
  • For bilingual counselors: assist Spanish-speaking families and interpret for staff
