About The Position

The School Health Assistant provides health care services to students and school communities served by the Columbia Gorge Education Service District.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Experience working in health or medical field
  • At least 1-year experience (within the last 5 years) working with groups of children in a professional or volunteer capacity, or any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job
  • Current CPR/AED certification that meets AHA Red Cross Standards and states that the individual has successfully completed a skill/return demonstration
  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle available for use on the job
  • Knowledge of principles and practices underlying the special field of school health.
  • Knowledge of state and local laws relating to health and social issues.
  • Exercise professional judgment in making decisions.
  • Communicate appropriately, collaboratively, and effectively with students, parents, administrators, other school personnel, health care providers, and community agencies.
  • Demonstrate a genuine interest in the student population and its health needs.
  • Organize a health office and manage time.
  • Be a self-starter or self-motivated.
  • Use a computer and various software applications.
  • Maintain records confidentially and comply with HIPPA and FERPA as needed.
  • Ability to successfully complete training for: Medication Administration (ORS 339.867-870); Training for Emergency Glucagon Providers (ORS 433.800- 830); and Treatment of Severe Allergic Reaction (ORS 433.800-830).

  • Ability to make accurate mathematical computations or apply standardized statistical procedures.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deals with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Responsibilities

  • Administer and document student medications following established school health services procedures
  • Perform first aid and delegated health care tasks for students with acute and chronic health conditions
  • Assist school and CGESD with immunization management
  • Provide emergency care, including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Automated External Defibrillator (AED) as necessary
  • Complete daily health record documentation following established school health services procedures that is accurate and confidential
  • Communicate necessary information to appropriate school nurse, school personnel, and parents/guardians while maintaining confidentiality
  • Utilize personal safety techniques to avoid exposure and injury to self, students, and other staff
  • Demonstrate ability to manage multiple and/or repetitive tasks
  • Carries out delegated nursing tasks for students and staff
  • Implements federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and procedures related to school health services
  • Implements state mandated screening programs
  • Implements laws, regulations, policies and procedures to control communicable disease within the school setting
