About The Position

The Wellness Manager leads the Catawba Nation Wellness Initiative to promote health, wellness, and safety for Tribal citizens and community partners. This role develops and advances community health policies and programming; engages the community through education, events, and classes; builds partnerships with Tribal and local agencies; and oversees funded projects, including supervision of staff/contractors paid through wellness funding sources. The position ensures grant compliance, program evaluation, and achievement of approved goals and budgets. This position is subject to the CIN Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual. Essential functions include managing day-to-day operations of the Wellness program, developing strategic plans and implementing administrative and operational procedures, ensuring program milestones and objectives are met, supervising and coaching staff, overseeing contractors and vendor relationships, researching best practices in community health and safety policies, facilitating consensus-building with Tribal entities, drafting and implementing community-wide policies, conducting community meetings and surveys to assess health needs, marketing wellness initiatives, building and maintaining partnerships, planning and implementing intergenerational and multidisciplinary programs, coordinating the Diabetes Prevention Program, overseeing group exercise programming, planning and teaching tobacco prevention classes, directing the Tribal youth running program, coordinating health and nutrition outreach, planning and training for safety measures, ensuring appropriate safety measures for events, serving as water safety personnel when assigned, supporting trail management, collecting and analyzing data for program success, working with funders for grant compliance and evaluation, managing grant functions, and supporting wellness-related food distribution activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
  • Valid state driver’s license required
  • Must be insurable under the Tribe’s insurance policy
  • Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license required
  • Certification(s) required or must be in the process of obtaining certification(s) necessary to teach assigned classes (e.g., Diabetes Lifestyle Coach, Tobacco Cessation, Parenting Classes)
  • Excellent writing, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to perform public speaking duties
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to multitask, manage multiple projects, and work effectively in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Ability to coordinate and/or teach wellness-sponsored classes and programs
  • Ability to build effective working relationships and maintain a professional, courteous demeanor with staff and the public
  • Ability to navigate PDFs, applications, and related documents in an electronic/paperless environment

Nice To Haves

  • Eight (8) years of experience in a health-related leadership role preferred
  • Experience planning meetings, activities, and community programs preferred
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the Wellness program.
  • Develop strategic plans and implement administrative and operational procedures for the program.
  • Ensure program milestones and objectives are met and activities align with approved budgets.
  • Supervise, motivate, and coach staff; monitor performance and support professional development.
  • Oversee contractors and vendor relationships related to wellness programming (e.g., community/traditional gardening).
  • Research best practices in community health and safety policies.
  • Facilitate consensus-building with Tribal entities regarding appropriate health policies.
  • Draft and implement community-wide policies related to health, wellness, and safety (e.g., tobacco and vending policies).
  • Conduct community meetings, focus groups, and surveys to assess community health needs.
  • Market wellness initiatives through social media, newsletters, and other outreach channels.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with Tribal departments and external agencies to advance program goals.
  • Plan, implement, and report on intergenerational and multidisciplinary programs/events supporting physical activity, chronic disease prevention, tobacco cessation, food sovereignty, and overall wellness.
  • Coordinate and manage the Diabetes Prevention Program.
  • Oversee group exercise programming and classes.
  • Plan and teach basic tobacco prevention and intervention classes.
  • Direct and coach the Tribal youth running program.
  • Coordinate health and nutrition outreach with the Catawba Service Unit, including tobacco cessation efforts.
  • Plan, practice, and train for safety measures for wellness-sponsored events and programs.
  • Ensure appropriate safety measures are in place for wellness-sponsored events and activities.
  • Serve as water safety personnel for other departments’ recreational river activities when assigned.
  • Support trail management and/or trail programming as assigned.
  • Collect and analyze data to measure program success and support continuous improvement.
  • Work with the CDC and other funders to ensure grant compliance and proper program evaluation.
  • Manage grant functions, including identifying opportunities, developing proposals, overseeing scope implementation, and completing required reporting.
  • Support wellness-related food distribution activities (e.g., Black Snake Farm distributions) as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
