About The Position

The Wellness and Outreach Specialist will work in partnership with other services within SUNY Sullivan's Learning Center to address the wellness needs of students, with a specific emphasis on mental health. The goal of this position is to create an atmosphere of wellness and caring on campus and provide programming which may prevent the need for more intensive services such as individual counseling and crisis support. Primary duties will include: facilitating support groups, hosting psycho-educational workshops, providing referrals to college and community resources, hosting community partners, and outreach activities. This part-time hourly position reports to the Dean of Student Development Services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in human services, psychology, social work, or related field, OR associate's degree and relevant experience
  • Experience working with adults of various ages and identities (parents, veterans, recent high school graduates, etc.)
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and passionate about discussing mental health topics with students (suicide, sexual health, substance use, etc.)
  • Experience in group facilitation and program outreach and coordination
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work closely with students, faculty and staff from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds

  • Knowledge of developmental disabilities and other challenges related to individuals' ability to socialize and be academically successful

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate and expand current prevention programming regarding mental health issues, domestic/ intimate partner violence, Title IX, substance use, suicide awareness, etc.
  • Facilitate support/social groups for students based on needs of student body
  • Collaborate with the College's mental health Counselors, Health Services, Title IX staff, and Student Activities to identify risk factors among student body and plan for addressing those issues
  • Create a sense of belonging for students by being approachable, kind, and understanding of their diverse backgrounds and emotional needs
  • Provide social-emotional support to residence hall students through groups, workshops, and activities. Some evenings required
  • Host informational tables and activities based on trending mental health and wellness topics
  • Act as the college's liaison for community agencies in the mental health field to enhance and strengthen current partnerships and bring their services to the campus
  • Attend Learning Center meetings and Behavior Intervention Team meetings when necessary
  • Track attendance and engagement, and document group sessions and direct student interactions
  • Provide referrals to resources such as food pantries, housing assistance, County social services, etc.
  • Some evening work required; occasional weekends. Schedule can be determined with the supervisor based on availability and needs of the campus.
  • Assist with maintaining the College's sensory rooms and tracking usage by students
