About The Position

The Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Use Prevention, Care and Treatment (BADUPCT) works to reduce morbidity and mortality related to alcohol and substance use among New Yorkers through contracting and oversight of prevention treatment, harm reduction, and recovery and support services; policy analysis and development epidemiology, surveillance, and evaluation; development and dissemination of treatment and management guidelines; harm reduction initiatives; public and provider outreach and education; and community involvement and interagency collaboration. About the Program: The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Division of Mental Hygiene, seeks a temporary full-time Wellness Advocate Supervisor for its nonfatal overdose response system called Relay, an initiative providing 24/7 support to individuals transported to hospital emergency departments (EDs) following a non- fatal opioid overdose. Wellness Advocates visit patients in the ED to provide immediate support and overdose prevention training following an overdose event and offer ongoing support and linkage to care for three months following hospital discharge. We work to ensure that all people who use drugs have an equal opportunity to achieve their full health potential.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Social Work or Mental Health Counseling. LMSW/LCSW/LMHC and CASAC a plus
  • Previous experience with individuals with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders including working with impoverished communities whose members are at high risk for chronic health conditions
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Experience with implementing Evidence Based Models
  • Experience working with and/or supervising peers
  • Knowledge of substance use, harm reduction, and drug treatment resources
  • Commitment to racial and health equity, recovery, as well as recovery-oriented and trauma-informed services
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills is essential: strong organizational skills
  • Proficiency with computer and electronic health records, and Microsoft Word applications including Office, Word, Excel and Access
  • Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check
  • You must live in the New York City Tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT) to be considered for a position at FPHNY.

Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical and administrative supervision to overnight and weekend Wellness Advocates in their role supporting patients following a non-fatal opioid overdose. Work hours for this position would be Monday-Friday 9am-5pm.
  • Utilize the program's database to monitor Wellness Advocates' cases to maintain quality decision making, quality assurance and documentation. Support internal program auditing activities.
  • Support program expansion at new hospitals through program planning and implementation with ED leadership, as well as through the planning and scheduling of ongoing ED staff trainings.
  • Review resumes, screen and interview candidates, hire and orient and on-board new Wellness Advocates.
  • Help to conduct new-hire and ongoing trainings for Wellness Advocates responding to non-fatal overdoses.
  • Conduct site visits and provide trainings about Relay to hospital emergency departments, community- based partners, and other related sites across the five boroughs
  • Assist in the development of policies and protocols, program materials, and presentations for program activities.
  • Participate in the execution of the program's research protocol and evaluation plan.
  • Work collaboratively with other Relay and BADUPCT staff to support the goals and mission of the program and agency.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the overall goals of Relay and mission of BADU and DOHMH
