About The Position

Under general supervision, this position is responsible for the operation of electric and acetylene welding equipment to make welding repairs to heavy equipment in the District. The role involves making welding repairs in the field to heavy construction and maintenance equipment, welding metal parts using gas welding, brazing, and various arc welding processes. It also includes related tasks such as thermal cutting and grinding, fixing broken or cracked parts, filling holes, and increasing the size of metal parts. The Welder will position and clamp components, hammer, chip, and grind work pieces to cut, bend, and straighten metal, preheat work pieces, and verify conformance to specifications using measuring tools. Additionally, the position may involve making mechanical repairs, such as replacing starters or generators, and performing preventive maintenance on service trucks.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, to understand highway traffic signs and signals in the English language, and to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.
  • Skill in welding different types of metal of various sizes and thicknesses.
  • Thorough familiarity with the use of electric arc and acetylene welding/cutting equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must possess certification to meet AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code or AWS D1.5 Bridge Welding Code or obtain it within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Applicants for this position must obtain a valid Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) with tanker (“N”) endorsement within 180 calendar days of hire or promotion.
  • Meet the physical and mental requirements for a CDL.
  • Pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol test (for external applicants or internal applicants not in a safety-sensitive position).
  • Subject to additional drug/alcohol testing according to the provisions of the ARDOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.

Responsibilities

  • Make welding repairs in the field to heavy construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Welds metal parts together, using both gas welding or brazing and any combination of arc welding processes.
  • Performs related tasks, such as thermal cutting and grinding.
  • Fixes broken or cracked parts, fills holes, and increases size of metal parts.
  • Positions and clamps together components of fabricated metal products preparatory to welding.
  • Hammers, chips, and grinds work piece to cut, bend, and straighten metal.
  • Preheats work pieces, using hand torch or furnace.
  • Positions, aligns, fits, and welds together parts.
  • Designs and constructs templates and fixtures.
  • Verifies conformance of work piece to specifications, using square, ruler, and measuring tape.
  • May make mechanical repairs, such as replacing starters or generators.
  • May perform preventive maintenance of service truck.
