About The Position

Responsible for performing a variety of welding functions under the direction and guidance of a Senior Welder. The individual should be familiar with gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and capable of using various types of equipment. A welder is also required to perform other miscellaneous tasks, as supervision deems necessary.

Requirements

  • Completion of welding diploma or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, quality manuals and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to solve problems.
  • Be able to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Must be able to read a tape measure and calipers.
  • Ability to perform simple shop math, convert decimals to fractional equivalents.
  • Must be able to identify and measure material.
  • 2G GMAW-P certified
  • Eligible to receive 2G ALUM GMAW certification
  • Stand-continuously (8-10 hours)
  • Walk-occasionally (2 hours)
  • Sit-rarely, very seldom may sit the entire shift
  • Lift to/from floor-up to 50 lbs. occasionally, up to 25 lbs. frequently
  • Lift overhead-up to 40 lbs. rarely, 10 lbs. occasionally
  • Lift waist level-up to 50 lbs. occasionally, 25 lbs. frequent
  • Two hand carry-up to 50 lbs. occasionally, heavier items are moved with a hoist. When lifting over 50 lbs. use team lift or hoist.
  • Push/pull-up over 50 lbs. force on carts with 2 employees, occasionally, may move the carts a distance over 30 feet.

Responsibilities

  • Reads and interprets blueprints and machine drawings to determine specific welding requirements.
  • Offers guidance to Welder I operators.
  • Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse, as specified by Machine recommendations.
  • Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle.
  • Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical or overhead positions.
  • Examines weld for bead size, discontinuities or defects.
  • Repairs broken or cracked parts and fills holes.
  • Positions and clamps work pieces together or assemble them in jig or fixtures.
  • Tacks assemblies together.
  • Clean weld and remove spatter.
  • Performs all necessary daily operator maintenance on all equipment used in welding.
  • Move parts in and move finished product out of welding area as needed.
