About The Position

The Welder B performs all functions of the Class C and D Welder roles, with additional responsibility for laying out, assembling, and tack welding structural pieces to form complex weldments. This position will work with a variety of materials and equipment to produce high-quality components that meet exacting specifications.

Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum three years of open table set-up including layout and flux-core welding
  • Technical Skills: Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, routings, and MOPs.
  • Strong understanding of shop mathematics and measurement principles.
  • Skilled in the use of layout, marking, and measuring tools.
  • Proficient in the use of oxy-fuel, carbon arc, and other welding processes.
  • Experience operating material-handling equipment such as forklifts, clamps, wedges, and mechanized tractors.
  • Materials Knowledge: Familiarity with carbon and alloy steels, welding consumables (including SAW flux), and shielding gases.
  • Tool & Equipment Proficiency: Competent in the setup and use of welding fixtures, tables, templates, cutting and heating torches, and straightening equipment.
  • Work Practices: Ability to plan sequence of operations and visualize completed weldments.
  • Skilled at anticipating and compensating for shrinkage and distortion.
  • Capable of maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Communication: Able to follow detailed work instructions and communicate effectively with supervision and, when necessary, with Engineering.
  • Safety: Consistent application of PPE and adherence to all safety and housekeeping standards.

Responsibilities

  • Review work assignments, work instructions, routings, MOPs, and complex drawings to determine layout and sequence of operations.
  • Plan welding requirements, visualize completed weldments, determine shrinkage and distortion allowances, and plan sub-weldments as needed.
  • Identify and correct discrepancies through supervision and occasionally communicate directly with Engineering.
  • Apply all required PPE and follow established safety procedures.
  • Lay out work using shop mathematics and appropriate measuring and marking tools.
  • Utilize templates, fixtures, and jigs - or fabricate new ones when necessary.
  • Assemble, tack weld, and complete inaccessible welds during setup.
  • Bevel or trim parts using oxy-fuel or carbon arc torch as needed.
  • Heat and straighten plates using manual or mechanized oxy-fuel processes or mechanical presses.
  • Install run-off tabs and bracing; reposition work using material-handling equipment.
  • Set up complex weldments, ensuring part/order identification on all work.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly workspace, perform routine equipment maintenance, and work safely at all times.
