About The Position

This position is located within the Winnebago Wazoki program. The Indigenous Doula provides culturally grounded, trauma-informed, and community-based support to Indigenous birthing people and families throughout the perinatal journey—pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. This role centers Indigenous knowledge systems, language, ceremony, and kinship practices to promote wellness, sovereignty, and positive birth outcomes.

Requirements

  • Associate degree preferred, but a high school or GED diploma required.
  • Lived experience as an Indigenous person with strong cultural grounding.
  • Completion of a recognized doula training program (Indigenous-focused preferred), but on the job training is provided.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous birthing traditions and intergenerational healing.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to provide assessment and care to population that includes all ages.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
  • Describes the scientific foundation of the field of public health.
  • Apply ethical data principles.

  • All applicants will comply with 45 CFR 1301, Subpart D, Section 1301.31, C and D, which require all prospective employees to sign a declaration prior to employment regarding all arrests and convictions of child abuse or violent felonies and to comply with PL 101-630 and PL 101-637 regarding criminal records check.

Responsibilities

  • Complies and upholds the values of the Winnebago Comprehensive Healthcare System and the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.
  • Provide emotional, physical, and educational support during pregnancy.
  • Assist clients in creating culturally respectful birth plans.
  • Offer information on traditional and Western birthing options.
  • Attend births in homes, hospitals, or birthing centers.
  • Advocate for the birthing person’s wishes and cultural practices.
  • Use comfort measures such as massage, breathing techniques, and ceremony.
  • Support healing and bonding through home visits and check-ins.
  • Provide breastfeeding/chestfeeding support and newborn care education.
  • Connect families to community resources, including mental health and parenting support.
  • Incorporate traditional teachings, songs, medicines, and language where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Elders, midwives, and community healers.
  • Participate in community events, talking circles, and wellness gatherings.
  • Records and documents according to established standards and procedures.
  • Provides continuity of patient care and case management by planning and exchanging information with other Tribal and community resources.
  • Interpersonal skills to inspire trust and build strong relationships with clients
  • Active listening skills to fully understand clients’ preferences and needs
  • Verbal communication skills to facilitate conversations with clients, their families and medical providers
  • Problem-solving skills to manage issues that arise during and after delivery

  • Ability to communicate and interact with all members of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team
