About The Position

Performs a variety of duties related to the operation and maintenance of water and wastewater plants in accordance with State and Federal water quality regulations. Pay is based on licensure level. Operator position(s) duties include, but are not limited to: Duties and responsibilities vary depending upon licensure level held as defined by the Superintendents and Director of Public Utilities. The Operator position assists Operators IV – I in the overall plant operations as defined per job functions. Engages in the safe and compliant operation, and monitoring, of the Town's water and wastewater treatment facilities, and distribution and collection systems. Follows Standard Operating Procedures and regulatory requirements for operating water and wastewater treatment systems. Collects regulatory samples and maintains plant records and audit documentation. Maintains appropriate inventories of chemicals, operator supplies and personal protective equipment. Performs a variety of preventive maintenance tasks associated with operating water and sewer treatment systems and associated collection and distribution systems. Reads meters, gauges, and dials; records statistical data; maintains logs of readings. Maintains appropriate chemical levels by adjusting system controls and/or adding, adjusting, and replacing chemicals in treatment plant system. Collects samples and performs laboratory tests; identifies concentrations of chemical, physical, or biological characteristics of water; records findings in logbook; evaluates data and writes reports as required. Performs a variety of preventive maintenance tasks such as oiling and adjusting power driven pumps, cleaning equipment, changing oil, repairing pumps, valves, and drive units, draining and cleaning tanks and basins, etc. Ensures that plant, wells, and pump stations operate within required standards. Unloads chemical deliveries and loads chemicals into feed equipment. Operates pumps and valves to control and adjust flow and treatment process. Answers telephones and radios; makes copies of forms and records; maintains files and log records. Performs building and ground maintenance including cleaning, mowing, and weed eating. Performs related tasks as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma (HSD) or General Equivalency Degree (GED)
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to 6 months to 1 year of experience in the professional water / wastewater treatment or closely related field.
  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, policies, methods, practices, and procedures of water and wastewater treatment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with supervisors, members of the general public, employees, Town Officials and others involved in performance of job duties; ability to assemble verbal and written reports in a concise, clear and effective manner.
  • Proficient mathematical ability to handle the required calculations.
  • Ability to evaluate operational process performance and to select appropriate actions.
  • Ability to write accurate reports and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to use independent judgement and work with little direct supervision.
  • Ability to operate a computer, and other office equipment needed to perform job duties; and excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of Town policies.
  • This position requires a valid Virginia driver’s license, satisfactory results of a criminal history check, credit history check, and/or drug/alcohol testing.
