About The Position

The purpose of this position is to ensure water is safe for consumption. This is accomplished by performing day-to-day water plant operations, testing and analyzing water on a scheduled basis, and determining and applying what is needed in order to ensure continued safety and quality.

Requirements

  • Applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations
  • Water treatment facility principles and practices
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
  • Ability to obtain Level C, North Carolina State Surface Water Treatment Certification. Failure to obtain within one year from hire date may result in termination.
  • Applicants must meet the City criteria for an acceptable driving record.
  • Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, handling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, hearing, twisting, talking
  • Exerting 20 - 50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors, inspects, calibrates, and adjusts water plant operations to verify that flows, pressures, chemicals, water tank levels, etc. are maintained.
  • Performs hourly, bi-hourly, and daily tests for temperature, pH level, and chemical and bacteria levels to ensure water meets state and federal regulations.
  • Determines proper chemical dosage rates to ensure water safety and quality based on test results.
  • Maintains detailed records of routine water plant operations and test results.
  • Backwashes filters by reversing the flow of water to remove entrapped solids when necessary.
  • Receives, unloads, and stores chemicals from vendors.
  • Communicates water conditions to appropriate City departments, Fire Marshalls, surrounding cities, and others.
  • Performs other similar duties as required.
