About The Position

Position Purpose: A Grade 2 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator in California is typically a journey-level role responsible for the skilled operation and maintenance of treatment facilities to ensure compliance with state and federal discharge regulations. Primary Duties/Responsibilities: Monitor and control the flow of wastewater, sludge, and effluent through activated sludge treatment processes. Operate, lubricate, and perform routine repairs on pumps, valves, electric motors, aerators, and blowers. Read and interpret gauges, meters, and control panels; access and utilize SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems to track operational data. Collect samples and perform standardized physical, chemical, and biological tests (e.g., pH, chlorine residual, dissolved oxygen). Maintain accurate shift logs and operational records to ensure the plant meets NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) permit requirements. Safely receive, store, and connect chlorine cylinders, polymers, and other hazardous chemicals used in treatment. Provide technical guidance and on-the-job training to lower-level operators and Operators-in-Training (OIT).

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED is required.
  • This position requires a Grade II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB).
