About The Position

In addition to the class characteristics of a Lifeguard, the Water Safety Instructor will be responsible for providing high-quality swim instruction, promoting a safe aquatic environment, and supporting the overall operation of the facility. Requirements

  • Basic pool lifeguarding principles and practices.
  • Materials and equipment used to maintain the pool, including pumps, chlorinators and related equipment.
  • Record keeping methods and techniques.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions.
  • Principles and practices of basic first aid.
  • Beginning through advanced swim stroke.
  • Teach swimming and lifesaving methods.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with staff and the public contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepares reports.
  • Performs maintenance and cleaning services of pool and other assigned areas.
  • Minimum of any combination of education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities.
  • Must be at least 15 ½ years of age at time of employment.
  • Observe swimmers in the pool and the surrounding area; provide emergency response, as necessary.
  • Perform emergency rescues; perform first-aid measures, including mouth-to-mask resuscitation.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on facilities and equipment, including monitoring chemical balance in pools, back washing pools, and related functions.
  • Assist in registering pool patrons; collect monies; balance and reconcile cash drawer.
  • Compile daily, weekly and monthly attendance sheets; maintain records.
  • Maintain records on activities and operations; document information in logbooks.
  • Perform a variety of custodial functions around the pool area; vacuum pool, scrub tiles and hose down deck; maintain washrooms and showers.
  • Assist in planning and conducting community events, general programs, and facility rentals; set up and takes down tables, chairs, and equipment for classes, activities, events, and meetings.
  • Provide basic facility maintenance.
  • Maintain physical fitness, including the ability to swim 300 yards, tread water, and lift, retrieve, and move over 100 pounds, including heavier swimmers and maintain stamina in all types of weather.
  • Ability to exert moderate physical effort in standing and walking, and stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and carrying, pushing, or pulling objects.
  • Ability to lift and carry pool equipment, supplies, and furniture weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Additional testing requirements are established by the department.
  • Sensory demands include the ability to talk and hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this class, the incumbent is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; and interact with patrons, staff, and the general public, and handle conflict situations involving the enforcement of safety standards and practices.

  • American Red Cross (or equivalent) First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22), - desirable but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the aquatic team to plan, prepare, and deliver swim lessons for participants of all ages and skill levels.
  • Communicate, explain, and enforce all facility rules, regulations, policies, and safety procedures.
  • Respond to aquatic emergencies by performing water rescues and administering appropriate first aid when necessary.
  • Actively monitor swimming areas to ensure participant safety and prevent accidents or unsafe behaviors.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with participants, parents, guardians, and community groups.
  • Assist with routine cleaning and maintenance of the pool, deck, and other assigned facility areas.
  • Maintaining order and enforcing established rules and safety procedures.
  • Scanning designated swimming area constantly to ensure patron safety.
  • Making frequent facility checks and maintaining facility cleanliness.
  • Performing First Aid and CPR techniques, and water rescue and safety procedures.
  • Instructing and interacting with aquatic program participants of all ages.
  • Performing facility and equipment set-up, take down, and general housekeeping.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
