About The Position

This is a seasonal position that requires consistent availability throughout the program, including any scheduled training before the session begins. The program runs from June 22 - July 31. The Water Safety Instructor will be responsible for teaching swimming skills, water safety, and stroke development to individuals of all ages and skill levels. You will create a safe, fun, and engaging learning environment while ensuring proper technique, progression, and confidence-building in the water. This position requires a strong understanding of swim instruction principles, safety protocols, and effective teaching strategies to accommodate diverse learning needs. You will work closely with participants, parents, and staff to ensure high-quality instruction and maintain a positive learning experience. Water safety instructors must be passionate about water safety, have a strong background in swim instruction, and enjoy working with children and adults in a structured setting.

Requirements

  • Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor preferred but not required.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification preferred but not required.
  • Aquatics, swim team, or water polo experience is preferred
  • Must be able to swim 300 yards continuously using - front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke
  • Must be able to swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10-pound object and remove it from the pool within 1 minute & 30 seconds
  • Must be able to work effectively with children of diverse skill levels.
  • Must be available from the hours of 2:30pm-7:00pm Monday-Thursday.
  • Full availability for at least one full two-week session is required. Time off requests during a session may not be accommodated.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and organize class teaching outlines, methods, and goals in alignment with the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program curriculum.
  • Adapt teaching approaches to accommodate participants’ experience levels, learning styles, and individual abilities to ensure effective skill progression.
  • Organize and direct class activities to provide high-quality instruction and ensure an engaging and structured learning environment for all students.
  • Ensure all class participants are properly registered and listed on the class roster before beginning instruction.
  • Complete and submit lesson records, student progress reports, and other required documentation to the Aquatics Supervisor and American Red Cross office as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Aquatics Supervisor on an ongoing basis to refine teaching skills, improve instructional techniques, and enhance lesson delivery for various age groups and skill levels.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and attitude while upholding high standards of instruction and customer service.
  • Adhere to and assist in enforcing policies and procedures set by the University, Associated Students, CSUF, Inc., and Titan Recreation to maintain a safe and structured aquatic environment.
  • Participate in required trainings, orientations, and meetings to stay updated on policies, teaching techniques, and safety procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall success of the swim lesson program.
  • Engage with parents/guardians to provide updates on student progress and answer any questions.
  • Serve as a positive role model, demonstrating professionalism and enthusiasm for swimming education.
  • Collaborate with other instructors and aquatics staff to ensure smooth program operations.
  • Ensure a safe learning environment by enforcing pool rules and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain constant supervision of students during lessons to prevent accidents and ensure participant safety.
  • Recognize and respond to emergency situations quickly and effectively.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of American Red Cross water safety and lifeguarding standards.
  • Reports accidents to supervisor and reviews changes required to avoid recurrence.
  • Reports maintenance problems and/or broken and unsafe equipment to the appropriate party or supervisor immediately
