About The Position

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform the duties of a Water Safety Instructor. It must be emphasized that the main duty of a WSI is to teach swim lessons to the best of his/her ability according to the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program.

Requirements

  • Hold a WSI certification
  • Ability to: Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Establish priorities for own workload based upon such factors as the need for immediate action and work objectives.
  • Understand and comply with oral and written instructions in the English language.
  • Communicate orally with co-workers in face-to-face one-on-one settings, or using a telephone or two-way radio.
  • Work cooperatively with other City employees.
  • Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
  • Must Hold a Water Safety Instructor Certification
  • Position may require the use of City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • This position is subject to the City of Liberals Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes one or more of the following: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, and follow-up testing.
  • Ability to successfully pass a background check and any other pre-employment screenings.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe environment in which you are teaching.
  • Be aware of the safety of each student at all times.
  • Follow Red Cross standards and guidelines for teaching
  • Complete all Red Cross paper correctly and on time
  • Use Water Safety Aids in class to help with class control and demonstrations
  • Use teaching equipment to enhance teaching methods.
  • Be creative and replace all equipment at the end of lessons in a prompt manner
  • Be fair in evaluating all students
  • Be courteous and kind to all kids no matter what age and level of ability
  • Be a hands on instructor demonstrate and review every day
  • Use Jr. Aids to help with class control and as a demonstrator
  • Wear approved lesson suit for all lessons
  • Communicate effectively with parents about all students progress in your classes
  • Turn in clip board
