About The Position

The City of Indianola is currently welcoming applications for the position of Water Resource Recovery Superintendent. The City of Indianola (pop. 16,069) is a growing community with a historic downtown, located approximately 15 minutes south of Des Moines. It is a safe community with Midwestern values, friendly people and excellent schools. Indianola, which is home to Simpson College, the world-renowned Des Moines Metro Opera and the National Balloon Museum and U.S. Ballooning Hall of Fame, is known for its excellent access to outdoor activities, a nice trail system, five major parks and two golf courses. The community welcomes thousands of visitors annually who come to Indianola to enjoy major events such as the National Balloon Classic, the Warren County Fair and other events. Under the general supervision of the Public Works Director, develops short and mid-range goals, manages the operational, financial, and personnel activities of the Water Resource Recovery Division. Directs the operations and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant, lift stations, and sewer collection systems. Ensures environmental health and compliance through sound technical, financial and personnel management. Assumes responsibility of the Water Resource Recovery Division (WRRD) maintenance duties and operations; plans, prioritizes, assigns, supervises, reviews, and participates in the work of staff. Responsible for the daily operations of the plant and sewer collection systems including lift stations. Assures compliance with local, state, and federal law regulations and standards; communicates with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Establishes schedules and methods for providing wastewater collection system and wastewater treatment plant operations and maintenance services; identifies problem areas in the collection system and treatment plant that require special attention; review needs with appropriate management staff; allocates resources accordingly. Oversees and participates in the preparation and administration of the division budget, expenditures, and capital plans.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school supplemented by a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, wastewater, environmental engineering, management, or related field.
  • Must possess and maintain a current non-restricted Grade IV Wastewater Operators Certification from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IA DNR) as required by the IA DNR.
  • Possession of current Class B CDL with Air Brakes and Tanker or able to obtain one within 6 months of hire date and maintain license for duration of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefer five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the operation and maintenance of sewage treatment plants.
  • Prefer one (1) year of administrative or supervisory experience.
