Position Description: We are a private investor-owned water company producing and providing potable water to over 250,000 customers (over 800,000 population) to an over 600 square mile area surrounding the city of Philadelphia. With nine treatment plants, the company can treat and deliver 150 million gallons of water to customers each day. The plants treat water from the Crum, Pickering, Brandywine, Perkiomen, Neshaminy, Ridley and Chester Creeks, the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers and the Upper Merion Quarry (vertical reservoir). Its primary surface water reservoirs can store nearly 10 billion gallons. Average daily usage on the system is about 115 million gallons a day. SUMMARY: This co-op intern position consists of a combination of both field work and office work. You will also interact and work with many different departments including but not limited to mechanical/electrical, treatment, operations, engineering, environmental compliance, and the laboratory. Our goal is to provide an environment where you can learn the drinking water treatment and regulatory process through real world problem solving and apply what you have learned to your future career goals. We are looking for a full-time recruit for a 6-month co-op time period. This is a highly dynamic and everchanging role based on the needs at the time. We want eager, go-getter types, who can think and act independently with minimal oversight.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Possess valid driver's license.
  • Live locally.
  • Ability to work independently to complete assignments.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in speech and writing.
  • Basic knowledge of chemistry and chemical calculations. Basic math/conversion skills.
  • Willingness to work in a drinking water plant environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred Majors: Arts & Sci. - Environmental Studies, Biology, Natural Sciences, Sustainability
  • Knowledge of the five (5) county area surrounding Philadelphia
  • Mindset to improve processes, efficiency, or way of work highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Sampling various water treatment and distribution sites for analytes such as volatile organic compounds, coliform bacteria, total organic content, and phosphate.
  • Testing for various parameters such as chlorine residual and ph.
  • Working with other departments to implement new technology or treatment options and creating reports based on findings.
  • Assisting staff and managers with project implementation and those associated work tasks.
  • Pick up and drop off material, samples, bottles, etc. as needed.
  • Data collection and entry for monthly/quarterly compliance reports and organization of data collected at our remote well stations in order to ensure compliance with Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection regulations.
  • You may help update SOPs and may also spend some time in the company laboratory.
  • Data analysis, data pulls, documentation organization from SCADA, LIMS, or WIMS software.
  • You will have the opportunity to be an integral part of a company that impacts public health of customers it serves by providing earth’s most essential resource.
