About The Position

Performs responsible work operating communication systems using radio, telephone, and computer equipment to provide assistance to bus drivers, Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATA) staff, and the public.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma and some experience operating multi-passenger vehicles and dispatching transportation information.
  • Must possess or obtain within 90 days a valid Virginia Class B Commercial Driver’s License with passenger endorsement and air brakes and have an acceptable driving record based on WATA criteria.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of passenger buses or similar automotive equipment; traffic laws and regulations applicable to equipment operation; hazards of equipment operation and of appropriate safety precautions; some knowledge of the geography of the County; principles and processes for providing customer service including setting and meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction; knowledge of safety and training practices in a transit environment.
  • Skill in use of computer software including Computer-Aided Dispatch and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks successfully and provide leadership as needed; tactfully work with others including co-workers, supervisors, and the public; communicate effectively; follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; work independently with minimum supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and dispatches all bus driver assignments for revenue service, special events and emergency response; provides timely follow-up and communication on operational matters, ensuring information flows between shifts and departments.
  • Monitors buses in service, ensuring routes and schedules are followed, and promptly address service interruptions or delays.
  • Communicates with drivers, staff, and supervisors using two-way radio, telephone, and computer systems to relay instructions, updates, and safety information; maintains accurate records of operator assignments, vehicle use, service changes, and incidents.
  • Provides excellent customer service to the public by answering calls, resolving complaints, and sharing schedule or route information; responds to emergencies, service disruptions, or accidents, coordinating with supervisors, operators, and emergency services as needed.
  • Acts as Lead Bus Operator when needed, covers routes and assists supervisors with operational duties; assists with ADA/Paratransit functions when needed, to include scheduling and driving.
  • Assists with safety and training duties as needed, including new operator onboarding, refresher training, ride-alongs, and compliance monitoring; supports administrative, HR, and communication functions as needed, including document preparation and internal staff communications.
