Requirements

  • Maintain a Class A Wastewater License
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science, or similar degree, preferred; relevant years of experience, considered
  • 2-5 years of experience operating an industrial wastewater treatment facility
  • Knowledge of solid separation, biological, and chemical treatment systems and principles (ex: activated sludge, DAF, MBBR, SBR, etc.)
  • Understanding of nutrient removal processes (ex: BOD, TSS, nitrogen, phosphorus)
  • Experience with wastewater laboratory testing
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to problem-solve and think analytically; ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools
  • High level of organization and documentation
  • Accurately read and understand signs, labels, warnings, directions, operator manuals, service manuals, and wiring schematics associated with the maintenance and/or operation of instruments, equipment, and/or chemical usage
  • Understand and operate basic computer systems and the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Effectively communicate with supervisors and co-workers and follow written and/or verbal instructions
  • Ability to attain and/or maintain a general driver’s license and pass an MVR
  • Willingness and ability to work extra hours as needed during the week, weekend, and/or holidays
  • Ability to work in a facility that processes multiple species including cows, pigs, and poultry
  • Must be 18 years of age or older for insurance purposes
  • Stand up to 100% of the workday
  • Consistently lift up to 50 pounds from floor to waist level; occasionally lift up to 100 pounds
  • Consistently bend at the waist and/or knees
  • Frequently climb ladders up to 40 feet; climb stairs up to 90 feet
  • Occasionally push and/or pull objects up to 100 pounds
  • Ability to work safely in all weather conditions including wet slippery conditions or extreme hot/cold

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of the wastewater treatment plant to ensure efficiency
  • Monitor evolving regulations and ensure ongoing compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations
  • Maintain, inspect, and/or repair wastewater equipment (ex: pumps, motors, tanks, etc.)
  • Monitor and adjust aeration, sludge age, and return rates
  • Collect and analyze water samples, record data, and create reports, as needed
  • Work closely with internal leadership, maintenance, and environmental personnel as well as city and/or state officials, agencies, and 3rd party laboratories
  • Monitor biological systems and adjust chemical levels, as needed
  • Maintain regular and predictable on-site attendance
  • Travel to other divisions, as needed (less than 20%)
