About The Position

The Vice President, Hospital-Based Medicine (VP-HBM) serves as the enterprise accountable executive for advancing Atlantic Health’s hospital-based clinical services—including Hospital Medicine, Pulmonary–Critical Care, Infectious Disease, Palliative Care, and Hospice—to sustained top-decile national performance. This role provides systemwide physician and administrative leadership, leveraging Vizient-aligned, outcomes-driven, and real-time performance management frameworks used by the nation’s highest-performing health systems. The VP-HBM is accountable for measurable, benchmark-validated improvement in clinical quality, patient safety, consumer experience, workforce engagement, operational efficiency, and financial performance across all Atlantic Health medical centers and affiliated sites of care.

Responsibilities

  • Systemwide oversight of all hospital-based medicine specialties across Atlantic Health medical centers.
  • Strategic, clinical, operational, financial, and cultural performance of hospital-based services.
  • Partnership with hospital presidents, CMOs, CNOs, nursing leadership, and system executives.
  • Achieve and sustain Vizient Five-Star Ratings across all Atlantic Health medical centers.
  • Drive sustained top-decile national performance in mortality, complications, efficiency, and patient safety metrics.
  • Establish hospital-based medicine as a high-reliability clinical enterprise with standardized, evidence-based care pathways.
  • Ensure Leapfrog “A” Grades across all medical centers through systematic harm reduction and safety leadership.
  • Leverage Vizient and internal analytics to enable real-time performance monitoring and clinician-led improvement.
  • Lead clinical effectiveness initiatives that reduce unwarranted variation, waste, and total cost of care.
  • Deliver consistently exceptional patient and family experiences comparable to top-performing national health systems.
  • Standardize inpatient communication, care coordination, and discharge processes to improve transitions of care.
  • Reduce avoidable readmissions and improve patient understanding and engagement.
  • Integrate palliative and hospice services into inpatient care models to ensure goal-concordant care.
  • Build a highly engaged, high-performing physician and APP workforce across all hospital-based specialties.
  • Establish leadership development pathways and succession plans for key clinical and administrative roles.
  • Standardize physician leadership expectations, performance metrics, and accountability structures.
  • Improve clinician engagement, retention, and well-being through operational excellence and inclusive leadership.
  • Lead strategic growth and maturation of hospital-based medicine programs aligned with system priorities.
  • Expand advanced inpatient care models including ICU optimization, specialty consult services, and coverage models.
  • Strengthen integration across inpatient, ambulatory, post-acute, palliative, and hospice care settings.
  • Support system and regional network growth through scalable, standardized hospital-based care models.
  • Deliver top-decile financial performance consistent with national benchmarks for efficiency and value.
  • Accountable for budget development, resource allocation, and productivity optimization.
  • Reduce observed-to-expected length of stay and optimize ICU utilization.
  • Translate clinical effectiveness initiatives into measurable cost savings and margin protection.
  • Lead with a system-first mindset, prioritizing enterprise outcomes over local optimization.
  • Model transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Serve as a trusted strategic advisor to executive leadership on hospital-based clinical performance.
