We are seeking a strategic, results-driven Vice President of Accounting to lead and scale all aspects of the company’s accounting function across our retail, wholesale, and e-commerce operations. This executive will be responsible for the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of financial reporting while ensuring strict compliance with U.S. GAAP and regulatory requirements. The VP of Accounting will be a key finance leader and business partner to FP&A, Merchandising, Supply Chain, Store Operations, and IT, driving process improvements, strengthening controls, optimizing systems, and providing actionable financial insights that support profitable growth across all channels.

Requirements

  • CPA required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; MBA preferred.
  • 12+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership in a senior controller or VP-level role.
  • Demonstrated experience building and leading accounting teams in a retail, omni-channel, or consumer business.
  • Strong expertise in inventory accounting, AR reserves, and multi-state sales tax.
  • Deep command of U.S. GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting.
  • Proven track record of improving processes, systems, and controls in fast-paced environments.
  • Advanced Excel skills and ERP expertise (SAP strongly preferred; retail ERP exposure a plus).
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and executive communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth, and evolving retail environment.
  • Willingness to travel up to 30% to our PA office, including occasional overnight trips.
  • HYBRID SCHEDULE: 4 days a week in the NJ office, 1 day work from home

Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee the company’s end-to-end accounting function, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, tax compliance, inventory accounting, and financial reporting.
  • Own the preparation and integrity of semiannual financial statements, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and clarity for leadership and stakeholders.
  • Serve as a strategic partner to FP&A, analyzing actuals versus forecast, identifying drivers of variance (margin, inventory, freight, markdowns, shrink, promotions), and ensuring alignment throughout the close.
  • Provide executive oversight of the monthly close, including review of journal entries and key balance sheet reconciliations (inventory, payroll, accruals, and variances).
  • Direct and enhance reserve methodologies, including AR, inventory (obsolescence/slow-moving), shrink, and markdown reserves, continuously improving month-end efficiency.
  • Lead multi-jurisdiction tax compliance, including sales & use tax, business licenses, store registrations, property tax, and other regulatory filings (U.S., and where applicable Canada/UK).
  • Ensure full compliance with local, state, and federal financial reporting and tax requirements.
  • Partner with IT to optimize ERP and reporting systems (SAP preferred), driving automation, data integrity, and scalable processes across retail and e-commerce.
  • Oversee treasury functions, including cash flow management, borrowing base calculations, and approval of weekly wires and payments.
  • Develop, document, and enforce accounting policies, internal controls, and standardized processes to mitigate risk and strengthen governance.
  • Provide strategic financial insights to senior leadership, including profitability by channel, store, and product category.
  • Act as a trusted finance leader across the organization, collaborating with Merchandising, Store Operations, Supply Chain, FP&A, and external partners (auditors, advisors, vendors).
  • Play a leadership role in the SAP implementation, ensuring retail and inventory accounting requirements are properly designed and executed.
