About The Position

Under limited supervision, the OSMP Volunteer Crew Lead role provides support and leadership to implement Volunteer Services goals in accordance with the City Charter for Open Space purposes and to implement the department’s strategic plan. Volunteer Crew Leads are responsible for field and project management, skills development, training implementation, administrative duties, public speaking, and logistical support of contract crews as well as one-day volunteer projects (ODVP) to advance community connection, education and inclusion as part of city of Boulder and OSMP goals. This position works with the Volunteerism and Service-Learning Program Manager for Groups on OSMP project initiatives and performs other duties as required for the Volunteerism and Service-Learning (VSL) workgroup.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and familiarity with project management variables including time, resources, requirements along with responding to unexpected or emergency events.
  • Knowledge of field safety and work in an outdoor setting with uncontrolled variables.
  • Skill and knowledge of volunteer databases platforms, Outlook 365, Microsoft platform (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) GIS Field Maps.
  • Skill (people and technical) with leading volunteer groups or contract crews in a land management setting.
  • Skill in communication is effective and clear with the VSL Team, public, and coworkers.
  • Skill in training and teaching people of all ages.
  • Skill with leading with emotional intelligence by motivating, developing, and directing people as they work, identifying the best people for the job.
  • Skill in written and oral communication with an ability to develop and relay daily work plans to crews, supervisors, partners and volunteers to ensure that directions and expectations of quality are being met.
  • Valid drivers' license and the ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.
  • Associate’s degree in natural sciences, resource management, education, public speaking, public lands, vulnerable populations or a similar field. Four (4) years of experience in a volunteer or leading vulnerable populations related program may substitute for the education requirement only.
  • Two (2) years of experience in natural resource related activities include leading work crews completing natural resource management or working with vulnerable populations.
  • Must have or be able to obtain valid current First Aid and CPR/AED certifications within three (3) months of employment.

  • Skills in selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things, including creative, one-of-a-kind methods.
  • Experience leading or supporting crews and volunteer groups completing natural resource management or land management field tasks with vulnerable populations. Along with providing environmental education hikes.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees daily operations of the Bridge House Ready to Work Crew program (people experiencing homelessness) and One-Day Volunteer Projects.
  • Leads Bridge House Ready to Work crews and volunteers to complete field projects for approximately ten (10) OSMP workgroups.
  • Works closely with each work group Project Manager and builds relationships to assure project scope objectives are achieved, along with service-learning deliverables are met.
  • Facilitates both online and in-person training and leadership development activities for contractors and volunteers while collaborating with approximately ten (10) different workgroups
  • Speaks publicly at One-Day Volunteer Projects, leads and creates environmental education hikes and training for contract crews and roving/impromptu environmental education for volunteers.
  • Leads contract crews (vulnerable populations) and volunteer groups with onsite oversight to create a leadership based culture that encompasses city values (respect, innovation, collaboration, customer service, and integrity).
  • Provides support, training, and field facilitation of Ready to Work Crews and volunteers.
  • Openly shares successes and challenges to support team learning and individual growth.
  • Coordinates equipment, materials, and PPE for project work.
  • Maintains regular communication on status of projects with project managers and supervisors to manage project completion timelines.
  • Operates a 4x4 truck safely on two track roads, and in urban areas. Will transport volunteers and contract crew members.
  • Meets daily and weekly to plan with supervisor on group volunteer projects and field operations for Bridge House Ready to Work Crews.
  • Walks-through projects with staff specialists to learn objectives, safety and deliverables.
  • Through training and experience becomes a site expert on equipment used by the VSL Team and will teach various safety trainings on power/hand tools/equipment.
  • Keeps detailed metrics and communicates information about field operations, incident reports, and other administrative tasks.
  • Prepare presentations for Ready to Work Crews, volunteers or for staff.
  • Conducts daily project site meetings, upholds field safety standards, communicates project goals in-person meetings, phone calls, or Teams.
  • Use volunteer management system database. Along with the Microsoft platform (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
  • Facilitates, organizes, and refines staff training in a field setting, keeps Standing Operational Procedures refined for the Bridge House Ready to Work Crews and staff groups we provide services to.
  • Attend weekly training/discussions as an active member in leadership to deepen and understand the effects of transference when working with vulnerable populations through a leadership lens.
  • Cultivates a shared language of support with team and grows self-awareness.
  • Shares and teaches safety to the RTW Crews and volunteers under minimal supervision.
  • Leads with emotional intelligence and develops, maintains, and strengthens partnerships with others inside and outside the organization.
  • Assists with hiring of additional Volunteer Crew Lead.
  • Trains a second Crew Lead in daily functions of the position and work collaboratively to sustain program capacity.
  • Knows and complies with all city and department policies, including safety best practices.
  • Reports and take personal responsibility for all accidents, damage to city property, and/or policy infractions.
  • Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents.
  • Use proper safety equipment.
  • Reports accidents, damage of city property and injuries to their supervisor.
  • Knows and complies with city policy, including best safety practices and the VSL Teams Standing Operational Procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
