About The Position

The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for designing, implementing, and
scaling a comprehensive volunteer engagement strategy that advances the YMCA of
Metropolitan Chicago’s mission, strengthens community partnerships, and supports
philanthropic growth.

This role sits within the Development Department to intentionally align
volunteerism with donor cultivation, corporate engagement, events, and
enterprise capital strategy. The Volunteer Coordinator ensures volunteers are
meaningfully engaged, stewarded, and positioned as ambassadors, advocates, and
future investors in the YMCA.

Salary range is $60,000-$70,000 per year with full-time benefits and

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• 3–5+ years experience in volunteer management, nonprofit development, or community engagement.
• Experience working in CRM systems (Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce, or similar).
• Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite products and the ability to adapt to new technology.
• Strong project management and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Ability to engage corporate partners and senior volunteers professionally.
• Passion for YMCA mission and youth development.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement an Association-wide volunteer engagement framework aligned with YMCA strategic priorities.
• Standardize volunteer onboarding, background checks, training, and recognition processes across branches.
• Develop annual volunteer growth targets tied to development and programmatic goals.
• Create and manage a volunteer lifecycle model: recruitment → onboarding → engagement → recognition → cultivation.
• Ensure compliance with YMCA policies and risk management standards.
• Partner with Development team to integrate volunteers into donor cultivation strategies.
• Identify high-capacity volunteers and transition them into donor pipelines.
• Support volunteer-led fundraising initiatives (peer-to-peer campaigns, events, sponsorship support).
• Collaborate on gala, corporate challenge, and signature events to ensure strong volunteer engagement.
• Track volunteer-to-donor conversion metrics.
• Serve as primary liaison for corporate volunteer groups.
• Build customized corporate engagement opportunities aligned with YMCA impact goals.
• Partner with Marketing & Communications to promote volunteer stories and impact.
• Strengthen relationships that can lead to sponsorships, grants, and enterprise capital support.
• Work with branch executive directors and program leaders to assess volunteer needs.
• Ensure equitable volunteer distribution across program areas.
• Support youth mentorship, camp, and community engagement volunteer initiatives.
• Maintain volunteer database and CRM tracking in coordination with Development Operations.
• Produce monthly dashboards on: Active volunteers Volunteer hours Corporate engagement Volunteer-to-donor conversions Retention rates
• Present quarterly reports to Development Committee and leadership.
• Reporting any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members, or guests to your supervisor
• Following all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children
• Reporting any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor
• Completing all child abuse prevention training as required
